Elementary Education

K-6 with Middle School Social Studies

WSU-Rochester Center provides a teacher licensure program for persons desiring to teach in an elementary classroom (K-6) or Social Studies in a middle school setting.  The Education Program is approved by both the National Council fo Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Minnesota Board of Teaching.

A collaborative agreement with Rochester Community and Technical College enables students to complete the program in its entirety in Rochester by completing an Associate of Arts degree at RCTC and the major's upper division courses through Winona State University at University Center Rochester.

Admission Requirements

  • Attend a mandatory Admission Meeting as posted by the Education Department.  An admission meeting is scheduled each semester.
  • Beginning Fall Semester 2003, thirty students per year will be selected through a competitive admission process.  The selection process will involve a point system based upon the following criteria:
    1. College GPA for at least 30 credits, minimum 2.75 required
    2. Minimum grade of "B" in ENGL 111 and CMST 191 or their transfer equivalents
    3. Minimum grade of "C" in Math 100 or the transfer equivalent
    4. Pass the Education Department Writing Clearance
    5. Response to a 2-3 page essay
    6. Evidence of completion of Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)

The WSU-Rochester education program offers courses on a yearly cycle that begins each Fall Semester.  Therefore students are encouraged to attend an admission meeting in fall prior to the year that they plan to begin the education program.  The competitive admission process will be explained at the admission meeting.
