Licensure Program

DEVELOPING QUALITY EDUCATORS THROUGH COLLABORATION

Winona State University (WSU), RochesterPublic Schools, and WinonaAreaPublic Schoolsare joint participants in a Teacher Licensure Collaborative at the secondary level. The program is currently designed to provide individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate content area with an opportunity to complete a middle school and/or secondary licensure in one of the following categories: 

  • business education 
  • chemistry
  • communications arts and literature
  • earth and space science
  • life science
  • mathematics
  • physics
  • social science

INTERNS

Applicants selected to participate in this program will be required to complete a year-long, full-time internship under the supervision of a licensed teacher in RochesterPublic Schools or WinonaAreaPublic Schools.  The internship will follow a summer of intensive pedagogical coursework and will include coursework after school hours throughout the academic year.

INTERN SUPERVISOR

The Teacher Licensure Collaborative is enhanced by the selection of master teachers in RochesterPublic Schools and WinonaAreaPublic Schools to be intern supervisors.  Each supervisor coaches interns in the content area and pedagogy during the year-long internship.  Responsibilities include demonstration teaching, observation, and instructional feedback.

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS

Requirements for applicants include the following:

  1. Hold a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field from a regionally credited institution.
  2. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a GPA of 3.0in major for licensure area.
  3. Provide by March 1st:
    • completed application form
    • official transcript(s)
    • course description and syllabi (if available) for courses in major
    • letter of application
    • a resume
    • two TLC recommendation forms
    • evidence of successful completion of the Praxis I test and Praxis II content test
  4. After initial review, and upon request, submit an application to WSU for and pay application fee.
  5. Participate in a finalist interview.
  6. Be available for May Term, Summer Sessions I and II, the year-long practicum and fall and spring evening coursework.

(4 credits including field experience)

Fall term:

Education 650:  Teacher Induction and Curriculum Orientation

(3 credits)

Education 651:  Induction Practicum (4 credits)

Spring term:

Education 559:  Professional Educator (3 credits)

Education 651:  Induction Practicum (4 credits)

Total credits for licensure program             30 credits

MASTER’S OPTION

Interns who complete the licensure program have the option of completing a Master of Science in Education Degree with an additional 17 credits.
