Student Support Services

TRiO SSS

What is Student Support Services?

Student Support Services (SSS) is a TRIO program funded by a federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education.  the goal of the program is to provide support to underrepresented students to help them reach the goal of graduation.  The SSS grant has been in place at Winona State University since 1982 and is funded for 225 students per year.  To date, we have received almost $4 million to provide services such as advising and tutoring.

Why would I want to become part of SSS?

The function of the program is to help eligible students obtain a bachelor's degree.  In other words, we are truly a complete support system for students.  We offer a wide variety of free services including: one-on-one tutoring, supplemental instruction, advising, career counseling, personal counseling, free tickets to cultural events, a study skills class and opportunities to attend a Student Leadership Conference.

How do I become part of SSS?

To become a participant in SSS, simply call us at 457-5465 or come to Krueger Library Room 219 any time from 8:00-4:30 to sign up for a registration interview.

The registration interview will take approximately 30 minutes.  During that time, the advisor will ask you questions to determine if you're eligible for the program.  If you are eligible, you and the advisor will work together to create a plan for academic success and set up appointments with appropriate tutors.

What if I'm not eligible for SSS?

Don't worry.  If you're not eligible, there are still tutors available through the Advising.  The advisor will sign you up for that program and help you make appointments with the appropriate tutors.  We'll also inform you of other campus resources such as the Academic Assistance Center (Krueger Library Room 220), the Math Department and the Writing Center.

If I have a disability will SSS coordinate accommodations?

While we do provide tutoring and services for students with disabilities, accommodations are coordinated through the Disability Resource Center, which is located in Maxwell 314  the DRC phone number is: (507) 457-5878.
