Dr. Karen Johnson, Ph.D.

Program Director

Dr. Karen A. Johnson is the Director of Student Support Services, a federally funded TRIO program here at Winona State University.  She has worked with SSS for a total of 15 years in Minnesota and Wisconsin.   “I am very committed to TRIO because I have seen the many ways that we help students succeed in higher education”.

Her position as Director includes writing the federal grant and annual performance reports, managing the budget, continually learning federal grant regulations, advising students, presenting workshops, attending conferences, and acting as a liaison with other campus offices.

Karen was born and raised in Canada but moved to Colorado to pursue a Masters Degree.  She then taught speech communication at Iowa State University for 4 years and eventually headed to Mississippi to earn a Doctorate Degree in Higher Education Administration.  Before landing in Minnesota, she worked in South Carolina and Wisconsin.  “I believe that the value of attending college is immeasurable and I hope to see increased support for higher education at the federal level”.

Karen spends her free time raising Alma the toddler in a bilingual environment.  Alma loves broccoli, animals, mud puddles, ice-cream, and her two puppies.
