There are two basic modules for WSU students to choose from: the Language and Culture Module or the Business Module.

Each module offers a variety of courses in English in addition to instruction in basic Chinese and Chinese Listening and Speaking. The Business Module is offered only during full semesters.

Course descriptions

Basic Chinese
This course is a comprehensive, which includes reading, speaking and writing. It lasts 10 weeks, offering 60 classroom contact hours of teaching. The students are beginners of Chinese. The course starts with the basics of Pinyin (Chinese pronunciation), strokes of Chinese characters and the basic expressions. After taking the course, the learners should be able to use the Pinyin and grasp the basic skills of writing the strokes.

Chinese Speaking and Listening
This course teaches the students the basics for speaking Chinese and gives them basic listening training. It is for the beginners of Chinese. After taking this course, the students should be able to say and understand basic expressions for daily communication. The course lasts 10 weeks and takes 40 hours.

Intercultural Communication
The aim of this course is to introduce the students to the Chinese culture and its main differences from Western culture. The learners should learn how to communicate effectively in different cultures, especially in the Chinese cultural background. The course lasts 10 weeks, offering 20 hours of teaching.

Chinese Cooking                                       
Chinese Cooking is a part of culture. The course is practice-oriented. The aim is to teach the students the skills of cooking Chinese food. It lasts 10 weeks and the lecture will be 2 hours every other week. At the end of the course the students will be asked to cook the dishes they have learned.

Taiji Boxing
Taiji Boxing is an important part of the Chinese culture. The course is practice-oriented. The aim is to teach students the skills of Chinese Taiji. It lasts 10 weeks and the lecture will be 2 hours per week.

Cultural tours
The aim of the cultural tours is to give the students more ideas of the Chinese way of life and Chinese culture. The tours include the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and other places in Beijing and Tianjin.

Electives

Chinese History
This course, one part of Chinese culture, is intended to give the students some idea of China that has a history of about 5,000 years. The course lasts 10 weeks with 2 hours classroom teaching each week.

Chinese Tour Geography
The aim of the course is to give the students a general idea of some of the places of interests in various parts of China so that they can better understand China.

Chinese Kungfu
Like Chinese Taiji Boxing, Kungfu is also an important part of the Chinese culture. The course is practice-oriented. The aim is to teach students the skills of Chinese Kungfu and get them to know the basic of self-defense. It lasts 10 weeks and the lecture will be 2 hours a week.
