Exchange students can apply for residential halls once they are admitted by the University. Most places in halls of residence are filled by local undergraduate students. Each hall also admits a small proportion of postgraduate students and reserves a small number of places for non-local students (i.e. overseas, exchange and visiting students). Competition for residential places is very keen. The University cannot guarantee to provide hall accommodation to every non-local student, but would try its best to find suitable accommodation for them.

Halls of HKU are known for their strong hall spirit. Members identify very strongly with their hall. Each hall has its own tradition, culture, and unique characteristics. Through developing a sense of belonging and commitment to the hall, members will also develop a similar sense of commitment to the society.

Halls of residence vary considerably in size and character. All halls have common rooms and recreational facilities as well as quiet places for study. Toilet facilities are communal.

Off-campus private accommodation is available to exchange students but is more expensive. The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at HKU runs a small accommodation service which gathers information on rooms and flats for rental in the vicinity of the University and advertises these on notice boards. Statistics on the range of rent of the different types of private accommodation nearby are also available on the OSA homepage http://www.hku.hk/osa. Students may only use this service when they are in Hong Kong since they need to contact the landlords directly for inspection of the place and other arrangements. OSA also offers advice and assistance in matters relating to the renting of rooms and flats. Incoming students without confirmed lodging are strongly advised to arrive in Hong Kong two or three weeks before commencement of semester to allow time to look for suitable accommodation.
