American students live on-campus with Japanese students and have opportunities for home-stays with Japanese families,

and field trips to points of historical and cultural interest.

Field Trips:

Japan can be deeply understood only by getting out of the classroom and experiencing it directly.  AIU puts special effort into arranging as many opportunities as possible for students to participate in a wide range of field trips and to take part as regular members in the community.  Culture course include visits to regional museums, exhibitions, local hot springs, and opportunities to watch local carpenters build thatched-roof huts.

Meeting the Community

Students may also have opportunists to communicate with local citizens through teaching their native language or explaining their culture at elementary/junior/senior high schools.  Students also have an opportunity to join the AIU Home Visit Program for which the university arranges a short overnight stay at a local host family’s home.  Getting to know some local people and experiencing their styles of living and communicating will enrich your stay at AIU with many enduring memories.

Clubs

All AIU students are encouraged to take part as regular members in the many clubs and circles.  Martial arts clubs such as Judo, Aikido, or Kendo, are popular among many students.

Cafeteria

The AIU Cafeteria serves three meals a day at reasonable prices.  The cafeteria, however, also functions as a study space and as an informal meeting place for all members of the university community.  In addition, this hall, with its high arched ceiling and large glass paneled windows framing distinctive curved walls, regularly serves as the venue for formal university gatherings, as well as the site for special events such as parties, musical concerts or campus festivals.

Library and Information Center

The library, open 24 hours a day, has over 60,000 books and other resources in the collection, mainly works in English.  It includes several general reading rooms with a seating capacity of approximately 200, and several rooms for individual or small group study.  Within the library, the Audio-Visual Laboratory enables students to study foreign languages in diverse ways using media such as DVDs, CD-ROMs, and the Internet.  Students may also utilize their own computers in the library.
