The distinctiveness of the Akita International University education begins with the fact that the international campus culture of AIU seeks to selectively blend elements of American universities with those of Japanese universities.  Not only is English the main language of instruction but certain features of an American-style university curriculum are being followed with the goal of meeting the highest internationally recognized educational standards.

Among the many distinctive qualities of the educational program are classes with small numbers of students, individualized study programs that match students’ interests and that cater to their needs, as well as a curricular focus that fosters both personal independence and a broad global understanding

AIU is the only Japanese university to open all classes to international students, and is the only university in Japan offering its entire curriculum in English.  With the exception of foreign language courses and a few content courses for international students with advanced Japanese language skills.
