Supplemental Instruction FAQ

What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?

Supplemental Instruction is an academic assistance program that utilizes peer-assisted study sessions.  Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions are regularly-scheduled, informal study sessions in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items.  Students learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working together under the guidance of a student who has already excelled in the course.

Who will be leading the SI session?

The SI Leaders are students who have already taken the course or a similar upper-level course.  They are often majors within the department and all are highly recommended by the faculty.  The leader sits in on the class lecture so they know what this instructor is covering.  The SI leader is a knowledgeable peer who will facilitate the study session.  They are not an instructor and going to SI is not a substitute for going to class or seeing the instructor during office hours.

Is SI effective?

Grade analysis indicates that students who attend SI consistently earn higher grades that those who do not.  In most classes, the difference is 1/2 a letter grade, although in some classes the difference has been as high as 1 and 1/2 letter grades.

How do I find out which classes have SI?

All of the classes that offer SI sessions are listed on our tutoring website.  Simply go to www.winona.edu/tutoring and a list of all available SI sessions can be found.

How often do I need to attend SI?

There is no set requirement for the number of SI sessions you need to attend.  However, many students find that coming only right before tests, while helpful, is not as effective as coming periodically throughout the semester.

What if I am not available at the time SI if being offered?

If you aren’t able to attend the whole session, don’t worry, it’s fine to come late or leave early.  If you are not available at all during the time the SI session is being offered there are tutors available for most classes.  Go to our website www.winona.edu/tutoring to find a tutor who is available for your course.

What if I need additional support outside of SI?

We believe the course instructor is the best source of assistance.  Additionally, w e have tutors available, free of charge for many courses at WSU.  Go to our website www.winona.edu/tutoring to arrange an individual appointment or to find a tutor with drop-in tutoring times.

How do I qualify for SI?

If you are a Winona State student enrolled in the course you “qualify” for attending SI sessions!

Where are the SI sessions held?

The sessions are held in various locations on campus.  Please refer to our website (www.winona.edu/tutoring) to find the location of your SI session.

Is there a cost to attend SI sessions?

There is no cost to attend any of the SI sessions.  They are absolutely free!  Take advantage of these study sessions!!!
