Tutoring FAQ
How can a tutor help me? A tutor is a person who gives individual, or in some cases small group, assistance. The purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner and thus no longer need a tutor. At the WSU Tutoring Center, it is our goal to provide you with the necessary skills and tools to enable you to become an independent learner.
What is the purpose of tutoring? A tutor will not complete your assignments or projects for you. The purpose of a tutor is to guide you through and explain concepts so that you can obtain the skills to complete your assignments on your own.
Who will be leading the tutoring sessions? Our tutors are other WSU students, your peers. All tutors must have completed at least 32 credits and have an overall GPA of 3.0. They must also have earned a grade of an A or B in the courses they will tutor for and be recommended by a faculty member. How can I prepare for my tutoring sessions? Please bring any relevant materials such as text books, worksheets, notes, handouts or other supplies you may needed. It is also helpful for the tutor if you have specific questions or problem areas to focus on. This will help guide the tutor to your main concerns and prevent you from spending time on issues that are not a concern for you. Most sessions are ½ hour in length, so being prepared to get right to your issues is vital and the best use of both your time as well as the tutors. Is there are charge for tutoring? No, this is a free service for WSU students.
How can I qualify for this service? If you are a currently enrolled WSU student, you qualify for this service! Students who are low-income, first generation college students, or have a disability may be eligible for additional tutoring and other support through Students Support Services and should also check out that program (see link on left)
How do I find out which classes have tutoring available? All of the classes that we offer tutoring in will be listed on our web site. Simply go to www.winona.edu/tutoring and click on "TutorTrac--Find a Tutor" to find an updated list there.
Where is the WSU Tutoring Center located? Tutoring occurs at several locations across campus. When looking at the schedule be sure to make note of the location for the particular session you will be attending .
What are your hours of operation? Depending on the subject drop-in hours vary, but occur mostly in the afternoon and evening. However, individual appointments are available during a wide range of days and times. The full updated schedule is available by clicking on "TutorTrac--Find a Tutor" at the top left of this page. .
Is there a limit to how many times I come in for tutoring? Not for Drop-in Tutoring. Individual appointments are generally limited to one hour a week, however, exceptions are made when the tutor is not in high demand. Participants who are eligible for the Student Support Services have access to additional tutoring funded by federal grant dollars. Follow the link on the left to find out more about Student Support Services.
