"Celebration of the Book 2005" Presents Max Yela
As part of Winona State University's "Celebration of the Book 2005," University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Special Collections Librarian Max Yela is giving a talk, "'You Call That A Book?': The Book as an Art Form," Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m., in Stark Auditorium.  A reception follows the reading.

Yela speaks on a variety of book types.  He describes the spectrum between the literary fine press book, a hand-made edition often numbering up to 200 copies, and the artist's book, which may come out in an edition of only one, and whose maker is often more concerned with the book itself as a kind of text and is only minimally interested in it as a transmitter of text.

Yela has mounted major exhibitions on the artist's book and on fine press publication and has spoken widely on the subject.  His interest has led him to teach the subject at the College of Visual Art at UW-M.

He is bringing samples of the wide range of books from the collection he curates, and he is speaking on many of the books that are on exhibit now in the show "Art of the Book and Artistic Serial," which is on display through March 3 in WSU's Watkin's Gallery.

Yela is senior academic librarian and head of special collections at the Golda Meier Library at
UW-M, a position he has held for ten years.  Prior to that, he was an associate librarian in the Morris Library at the University of Deleware.

The "Celebration of the Book" is a semester-long event intended to highlight the importance of the book as both an object and a cultural wellspring.  It has been organized by the Consortium for Liberal Arts Promotion and is sponsored by WSU's Departments of English, History, Geoscience, Education and Art; the Residential College; the WSU Library; the WSU Foundation and Sutton Hoo Press.

WSU Holds Civility Symposium
Winona State University holds a symposium on civility on Friday, Feb. 18, from 1-3 p.m., in WSU's Somsen Auditorium.

The civility topic was recommended by WSU's faculty senate to help the university community be better prepared to deal appropriately with controversial issues as they may arise.

"The idea is to allow [symposium participants and speakers] as much freedom as possible to talk about matters of civility, civil liberties, civic engagement and political discourse on college campuses from their perspective," said Troy Paino, dean of the college of liberal arts and symposium organizer.

Some of the speakers at this forum include: D'Ann Urbaniak Lesch, Center for Democracy and Citizenship at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs; Timothy Shiell, philosophy professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout; and Paul Durand, Winona Area Public Schools superintendent.

The symposium focuses on several issues including free speech limits, the university's role in protecting and promoting civil liberties, the question of whether the university should require civility and if civility conflicts with civil liberties, civility's definition and importance and how civility on a college campus improves our world.

"I am sure the students, staff, faculty and administration of WSU, and the Winona community, will learn a lot from what the speakers have to say at this symposium," said Paino.

After the talks, 45 minutes will be dedicated to a question and answer session.

WSU Presents "Art of the Book and Artistic Serial"

"Art of the Book and Artistic Serial" is open at Paul Watkins Gallery and is on view through March 3.

Preston Lawing's "Chucklehead's White Mules"

The exhibit includes a range of examples of limited-edition books, including fine press books and artists’ books. The book's text is letterpress printed and the illustrations include intaglio, silkscreen, vitreograph, photo-intaglio, blind emboss and woodcut prints. "I use it as a teaching tool," said Lawing, "because it has examples of so many different printmaking processes." It is one of two of his books that can be handled by viewers anytime during the exhibition.
