WSU Hosts Art Dedication Ceremony

The Library at Winona State University is the site for an event Friday, April 15, that features the dedication of a collection of waterfowl art carvings and antique waterfowl decoys, and the dedication of a collection of hand-crafted wooden bowls influenced by the Anasazi Indians.

The event begins Friday at 2 p.m. with an informal social time, demonstrations and a book signing. At 3 p.m., a brief ceremony is planned to dedicate the collections as part of the art holdings on display in the WSU Library.

As part of the program, a new book, Artists in Wood, is available for purchase. The book features several antique waterfowl decoys that are a part of the WSU collection as well as the original hand-carved waterfowl art of carvers Marv Meyer from Richfield, Minn., Marv Bernet, from Cottage Grove, Minn. and Sam and Lilly Nottleman, carver and painter, associated with Loon Lake Decoy Company of Wabasha, Minn. Meyer, Bernet and the Nottlemans will be present for the dedication event.

Richard Fitzgerald is the creator of a number of fine art wooden bowls that he creates from wooden logs on a lathe and then adorns with inlaid turquoise, malachite and other materials. Fitzgerald, from Nucla, Colorado, has Native American ancestry and says his work is inspired by the ancient pottery of the Anasazi Indians of the Four Corners region of the southwest United States.

Fitzgerald will be present at the dedication event to describe his creative process of taking dead wood and revealing the beautiful art that resides within each piece.

The collections have been developed by Erv Bublitz, a WSU sociology professor, with assistance, support and donations from other art lovers.  Bublitz is well-known for sharing his love of American Folk Art through several collections both in the WSU Library and across the campus.

Dave Carlson, of Eau Claire, Wis., host of the syndicated Northland Adventures television program plans to attend with a video crew for a future segment on his program.

The dedication event is free and open to the public.
