Domestic Markings, a ceramic installation by Kelly Jean Ohl, is part of Winona
State University’s
Faculty Exhibition 2004 that
continues in Watkins Gallery through Nov. 18. Ohl
describes the work: “Clay comes from the earth, and retains every mark we make
upon it, where it is squeezed or pressed. I like to think of clay as a metaphor
for our lives: we carry with us the influence of everyone who has touched our
lives. My mother and grandmother were both talented women whose creativity was
expressed through their cooking, needlework, and other handicrafts in the home.
I have used their tools in an unconventional way to shape and texture these clay
forms, in homage to their creative energies and their profound influences upon
me.”
