Events and Reminders

WSU and Dozens of Local Agencies Plan Center for Mississippi River Studies

Winona State University hosts "River Focus 2004,"an event for WSU faculty to partner with area river agencies on how to develop a new interdisciplinary program focused on the Mississippi River, on Wednesday, Dec. 1, from Noon-4:15 p.m., on the WSU Campus

Agencies such as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Army Corps of Engineers and several universities will take part in the event. These river experts will help WSU faculty shape the WSU Center for Mississippi River Studies, which the university plans to begin in Fall 2005.

One program of the center is an interdisciplinary living and learning program comprised of five river courses and co-curricular activities that will be available to 25 selected students who will live in the same residence hall. They will take a set of five courses focused on the Mississippi River, including English composition, American history, photography, biology and a fifth course which would require a student to analyze how each of these subjects are related. This set will fulfill 17 hours of WSU university studies requirements. Drake Hokanson, coordinator of River Focus 2004 and chair of the steering committee for the Center for Mississippi River Studies, said this style of learning is beneficial for students.

"Students realize that the world is interdisciplinary. Why shouldn't education also be interdisciplinary," said Hokanson. "When students have the opportunity to see these things as a whole, rather than as components, then really neat things can happen for them."

Several faculty members are working on the logistics behind implementing the interdisciplinary program. Students will register for this program in spring 2005.

WSU Hosts Messiah Sing-In

Winona State University's concert choir collaborates with the Central Lutheran Church of Winona to present George Frideric Handel's "Messiah" for the 13th consecutive year, Saturday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m., in WSU's Somsen Auditorium.

Many different choirs from the Winona area will combine to form a massed choir. During the evening, the Senior Choir and Youth Choir of Central Lutheran will share the stage with singers from Winona Senior High School, Peter Schleif, director; the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church Choir, James Ballard, director; the WSU Concert Choir and Women's Chorus, Dr. Mechell, director; the McKinley United Methodist Church Choir, Jonelle Moore, director; the First Congregational Church Senior Choir, Nasalie Schoen, director; the Handbell Choir of Central United Methodist Church, Norma Duden, director; and the WSU Flute Choir, direct by Zoe Shepherd, the WSU Oratorio Chorus, directed by Dr. Mechell, will also be participating.  Many of the choirs will also be performing one selection of their choice.

Professional instrumentalists from the community will accompany the performance. The vocal soloists for the evening will be sopranos Hope Anderson and Ruby Oian and tenors Bryan Mechell and Cor Franson.

Throughout the past years, Dr. Mechell has invited several area conductors to share their directing talents in the performance. This year's guest conductors are Dr. Patrick O'Shea, of Saint Mary's University, and James Ballard, of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

The "sing-in" concept, introduced by Dr. Mechell, is unique because the audience is invited to sing along with the choirs. They are encouraged to bring their own music score to the concert, or they may also purchase music at the door. Hardt's Music Store representatives will be in attendance for anyone wishing to purchase a score. As there are no tickets necessary for this event, a free-will offering will be taken.

Biology Students Seek Volunteers for Atkins Study

Several seniors working on a capstone/research project are looking for volunteers to participate in their study of the Atkins diet.  In the study, participants are assigned to an Atkins based diet that is primarily foods rich in saturated fats, including mammalian meats such as beef and pork, or a diet rich in polyunsaturated fats, including seafood and poultry. From this study, the students hope to learn the effects of saturated fats versus polyunsaturated fats on total cholesterol, triglycerides (HDL & LDL) and ketones. They also hope the data will determine how to improve the lipid lowering ability of the Atkins diet.

The study will be conducted over a period of four weeks, beginning the week of Jan. 10 and ending on Feb. 11. The participants will be asked to attend two brief informational meetings, one on Dec. 17, the other in mid-January. The benefit of participating in this study is not only weight loss, but free data regarding cholesterol level, a lipid analysis record, a caloric intake record and the book, The Atkins Essentials.

The study is under the supervision of Ted Wilson, biology. For more information, contact Tonya Pleschourt at tjplesch8670@webmail.winona.edu, or phone at 507-301-8395.
