| WSU Bands in Concert to Perform |
Winona State University presents the WSU Bands in Concert Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m., in the Peforming Arts Center Main Stage.
The concert features the WSU Wind Ensemble and the WSU Symphonic Band, both directed by Donald Lovejoy.
The concert is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
The WSU Wind Ensemble performs: Sinfonia, by Gaetano Donizetti; Fantasy, by Ty Alan Emerson (Adam Davis, soloist); Music in the Air!, by Alfred Reed and Danza Final, by Alberto Ginastera. Adam Davis is also a featured alto saxophone soloist.
The WSU Symphonic Band performs: Mock Morris, by Percy Grainger; Children's March, by Percy Grainger; Second Suite in F, by Gustav Holst and American Overture, by Joseph Jenkins. Band alumni are also joining in this Symphonic band performance.

| WSU Presents Jazz Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra Concert |
The Winona State University Department of Music presents the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Rich MacDonald and the Chamber Orchestra, directed by Paul Vance Friday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., in the Performing Arts Center Mainstage Theater.
The concert's special guest artists are Mary Hammergren and Richard Hammergren.
The concert features several arrangements from Dick and Mary Hammergren's professional careers in the Los Angeles television and recording studios, performed by Winona State students in a "first-ever at WSU" studio orchestra format.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.

| WSU Presents Nanotechnology Lecture Series |
The Winona State University of College of Science and Engineering, in cooperation with the Rushford Institute of Nanotechnology, presents "Nanotechnology: The Next Big Thing, only smaller", on Wednesday, April 20, at 7 p.m., with refreshments at 6:30 p.m., in the WSU Science Laboratory Center Auditorium, Room 100.
Wendy C. Crone, an expert in planning and implementation of nanoscience programs and associate professor in the department of engineering and physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, presents this lecture, which is the second lecture of a three part series on engineering, nanoscience, the exploration of major events happening in this area, and the ensuing economic and business implications for southeast Minnesota.
Nanoscience is the study and design of materials and systems at the nanoscale, which is the scale of atoms and molecules. Nanoscience has been applied to a variety of diverse areas, such as creating stain-resistant pants, self-cleaning windows and longer-lasting tennis balls
Crone's talk provides some examples of nanotechnology and directions of future research. Her research interests focus on improving fundamental understanding of mechanical responses of materials, improving material behavior through surface modification and nanostructuring, and developing new applications and devices.
Crone is also the director of the interdisciplinary education group of the UW-Wisconsin Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) on nanostructred materials and interfaces, which is an education and outreach effort, focused on Exploring the Nanoworld.
She has conducted research on shape memory alloys, metallic single crystals, and biomaterials with specific emphasis on pseudoelastic behavior, plastic deformation, and fracture in these materials.
This three part lecture series is sponsored by the WSU Foundation and the Miller Brothers Foundation.

| Great River Reading Series Presents Writer William Least Heat-Moon |
Winona State University presents writer William Least Heat-Moon as he reads from his work, as the finale to the 2004-05 John S. Lucas Great River Reading Series. The reading takes place Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m., in the Maxwell Leadership Center.
Heat-Moon is known as one of the nation’s preeminent travel writers. His first book, Blue Highways, an account of his journeys on America’s rural back roads, came out in 1983 and was on the New York Times best seller list for almost a year. His second book, published in 1991, was PrairyErth: A Deep Map, an in-depth look at a county in Kansas. In 2001, he published River Horse: A Voyage Across America, an account of a 5,000 mile journey from the Atlantic at New York Harbor in hopes of reaching the Pacific. The book is full of adventures on the rivers and lakes of the interior, as well as encounters with people along the way and musings on America’s most famous explorers, from Henry Hudson to Lewis and Clark. The Cleveland Plain Dealer called this book a “voyage full of imagery, insight and appreciation.”

| WSU Celebration of the Book Presents Emilio DeGrazia |
As the final event of Winona State University’s Celebration of the Book, Emilio DeGrazia, WSU professor emeritus, is presenting a lecture entitled “Rethinking the Book: Passages of Power” Friday, April 22, at 4 p.m., in the Library Athenaeum.
In addition, as part of this event, the winners of the WSU Student Book Collection Contest will be announced. This event is free and open to the public.
The Celebration of the Book is a semester-long event intended to highlight the importance of the book as both an object and a cultural wellspring. It has been organized by the Consortium for Liberal Arts Promotion (CLAP) and is sponsored by Winona State’s English, History, Geoscience, Education and Art Departments; the Residential College; the WSU Library; the WSU Foundation; and Sutton Hoo Press. |

| WSU Lyceum Series Presents Joe Chvala |
The Winona State University Lyceum Series presents Joe Chvala in residence, April 17-23; Chvala is artistic director of the Twin Cities company, "Joe Chvala and the Flying Foot Forum."
As a prelude to the 2005-2006 Lyceum Series, Chvala will be working with WSU students in classes and rehearsals to create a piece for WSU Dancescape 2006. This choreographic excerpt from "MoJollnir" is a further exploration of Chvala's work that was performed at the opening celebration of the New Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
In addition to master classes for students, Chvala presents a free public lecture and demonstration in Phelps Dance Studio Tuesday, April 19, at 11 a.m.
Chaval will return with the "Flying Foot Forum" to perform a full evening show on the WSU Performing Arts Center Main Stage as a part of the 2005-2006 Lyceum Series April 12, 2006.
Mike Steele of the Star Tribune says of Chvala's work: "This is fierce exhilarating dance-making, a connecting of ancient Norse myths with the industrial rhythms of our time, of pure energy with intellectual provocation."
These events are sponsored by the WSU Lyceum Series, and the Department of Theatre and Dance.

| Department of Engineering Announces Open House |
The Winona State University Department of Composite Materials Engineering is hosting their annual Open House Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m., in Stark Hall, Room 103.
The event will have an overview of the program and of the WSU admission procedures, presentations by composite materials engineering graduates and tours of the facility along with demonstrations.
This event is free and open to the public.

| Scholarship Opportunities in South Korea |
The Global Exchange Program at Soonchunhyang University is offering a study abroad experience for Winona State students that includes Global Studies classes in English, instruction in Korean, the chance to live in the “English Village” and intern as a “Cultural and Language Ambassador.”
Through this structured program, students receive a stipend for interaction with Korean students. Both the international and Korean students gain cross-cultural understanding that goes well beyond the possibilities of a traditional classroom. Winona State students pay their regular tuition and receive approximately $125 per week for interning. Upon their arrival to Soonchunhyang University, each student is also reimbursed $800 for flight.
Application deadline for fall semester is extended to April 22.

| WSU Hosts Women's Golf Fundraiser |
Winona State University is hosting the third annual Women's Golf Fundraiser May 7, at 1 p.m., at Cedar Valley Golf Course.
The tournament includes 18 holes of golf with a golf cart and prime rib buffet dinner. The event is a 4-person scramble with net scoring and the committee will handicap the teams.
Registration deadline is for the first 100 players (25 teams) and the price is $70 dollars per player. Players may form their own teams; however, singles, twos and threes are encouraged to register. The committee will help form teams for those without teams of four.
The tournament prizes include: six team prizes valuing over $1,000 and pin event awards of $200 in gift certificates for men's long drive on hole one, long putt on hole three, women's long drive on hole five, long putt of hole seven, long putt on hole nine, women's closest to pin on hole eleven, long putt on hole 13 and closest to the pin on hole fifteen. There are also raffled prizes including over $2000 in prizes from sponsors such as: Cedar Valley Golf Course, Federated Insurance, Wenburg Insurance Associates, Northland Golf and Ski, Merchants National Bank, Coulee Golf Bowl, Festival Foods, Coffee Mill Golf Club, New Prague Golf Club and the Warrior Golf Team.
Each participant also receives a golfer gift pack worth a $100 sponsored by Northland Golf and Ski, SL Designs and the Warrior Golf Club.
Additional events include: out-drive the coach on hole one, hit-the-green on hole four, hit-the-green on hole fifteen.

College of Science and Engineering Co-Sponsor Presentation |
The College of Science and Engineering and American Society for Quality is sponsoring "Sharing Quality Improvement Tools between Industry and Health Care" Thursday, April 21, from Noon-5 p.m., in the Maxwell Leadership Center and Science Laboratory Building.
The keynote speaker, James M. Levett, is presenting at 1 p.m., in the Maxwell Leadership Center. He is the Chief Medical Officer at Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa. Levett is actively working in the areas of process management excellence, outcomes research and the implementation of quality management system principles in healthcare organizations. In 2003, James Levett led PCI to become certified to ISO 9001:2000, the largest medical group in the United States to achieve this distinction. Levett has also served as a National Examiner for the Baldrige National Quality Award Program in 2003 and 2004.
The presentation schedule includes: Dave Olson: "Quality Systems in Medical Device Packaging" at 2 p.m.; Kim Snyder: "Lean Principles in Health Care," at 2:30 p.m.; Marv Seppanen: "Process Design and Improvement Tools for Non-Manufacturing Processes," at 3:10 p.m.; Bill Gould: "Winona Health's Work Injury Management Program," at 4:10 p.m. Presentations are at the Science Lab Building, Lecture Hall room 120.

Counseling Department Offers Workshop |
The Winona State University Rochester Center Department of Counselor Education is offering a seminar Friday, April 22, from 4-10 p.m., and Saturday, April 23, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., in the Coffman Building, Rooms 206/208, at the University Rochester Center. Chad Jensen is the instructor for the workshop, "Methamphetamine and Club Drugs." The purpose of this workshop is to present workshop participants with the history and statistics surrounding methamphetamine and club drugs; describe the phase of seduction and the reasons for the popularity of these drugs; provide the pharmacological aspects of these drugs including route of administration and neurochemical reactions to methamphetamine and club drugs; present detoxification strategies involving typical and problematic applications of these drugs; and introduce participants to treatment approaches.
Treatment approaches include rapport building, issues in early treatment, best practices and motivational interviewing.
Instruction will include lectures, PowerPoint presentation, educational films, guest speakers and interactive learning opportunities.
This workshop is recommended for counselors, teachers, nurses, psychologists, social workers, parents and others who would like to gain insight into this contemporary issue.
Jensen has more than 15 years of professional experience in counseling, crisis intervention and social work. He earned his master¹s degree in youth and human service administration from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Jensen is a licensed master social worker in the state of Iowa and is credentialed as an advanced certified alcohol and drug counselor. He currently serves as the executive director of New View Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention Center in Carroll, Iowa.

Black Cultural Awareness Association Presents WSU Idol Contest |
The Winona State University Black Cultural Awareness Association presents WSU Idol Contest Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m., in the East Café, of Kryzsko Commons.
The cost is $3 for all students and $5 for non-students. Receive $1 off admission with the donation of one non-perishable food item.
The preliminary screening of contestants is Tuesday, April 19, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., in the Purple Rooms, of Kryzsko Commons. Applications and the $10 application fee are due April 19, at 4:30 p.m., in the Cultural Diversity Office.
