WSU Students Selected to attend Midwest Nursing Research Conference

A group of undergraduate and graduate students from Winona State University have been selected to represent WSU at the Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) Annual Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 1-4.

The MNRS is an organization that has been promoting, disseminating and utilizing nursing research throughout the Midwest for more than 20 years.

"As one of its functions, MNRS encourages socialization and prepares students and new investigators for the role of nurse researcher," said Phyllis Gaspar, WSU master's program in nursing professor.

The selected graduate level students will be presenting their research projects and thesis at the conference, which expects 1,000 attendees. This is the first year that MNRS has also provided a session for undergraduate students to present their research.

"Providing the opportunity for undergraduate students and master's students encourages interest in further graduate education," said Gaspar.

Through the students' presentation of their research, their work is acknowledged as well as critiqued by recognized nurse researchers.

"Attending the conference provides students with an opportunity to network with other students as well as with the researchers whom the students know from reading their work, " said Gaspar. "It has provided a wonderful professional learning experience for the students."

The following WSU graduate students were selected to present their research at the MNRS conference: Anne Buhl, Shannon Huber and Allison Meisheid present "Bone Mineral Density and Hormone Replacement Therapy Among a Select Group of Religious Sisters"; Amy Brown presents "Nutrition Behaviors of the Rural Elderly and their Association with Perceived Health Status"; Donna Kamann and Theresa Bender present "A Descriptive Study of Elderly Nuns, Hearing Impairment, and the Incidence of Falls: A Secondary Analysis."

The following WSU undergraduate students were selected to present their research: Julie Larson and Andrea Wagner present "Learning Styles of New Hemodialysis Patients"; Noreen and Leah White present "Knowledge and Attitudes towards Breastfeeding among Traditional-age College Students."

WSU faculty members Phyllis Gaspar, Judy Bautch, Jo Stejskal, Jan Kraabel and Melanie Johnson present "Factors Associated with Falls Among Elderly Women."

The MNRS has more than 1,300 members and is nationally recognized.
