WSU Helps Southern Asia Rebuild After Tsunami Tragedy

With relief efforts pouring in to southern Asia from around the world, the Winona State University National Broadcasting Society (NBS), the Winona area Rotary Club and the WSU community are working together to start the rebuilding process in southern Asia.

WSU is hosting two "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" banquets organized by the NBS on Tuesday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 2, at 6 p.m., in the East Hall of Kryzsko Commons. Tickets cost $20 a plate.

The banquets feature International and American food, along with entertainment by students from the WSU International Office.

Several community and campus organizations are donating products and services for this community-wide event. All of the food for the banquets is being donated by Tom Thompson of Country Market, in Winona; Chartwells, WSU's catering service, is donating Chef Tad Alfod's services, access to the kitchen, and clean-up and set-up of the events; and WSU's Publication Office is donating the posters, brochures and tickets for the event.

The goal of the banquets is to raise $10,000. All of the proceeds go to the Winona area Rotary Club. If the money raised exceeds $10,000, the difference will go toward the education of the students in the National Broadcasting Society.

Tickets to the banquets go on sale Monday, Jan. 24. They can be purchased at Country Market, Audio Designs, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, WSU's International Student Office, KQAL in WSU's Performing Arts Center, HBCI and the Winona Post.

If tickets are purchased before Jan. 31, 2005, the Internal Revenue Service will allow taxpayers who itemize deductions to claim charitable donations, made for the relief of the victims of the Tsunami, on their 2004 tax returns. The new law, enacted on Jan. 7, allows these donations to be deducted as if they were made on Dec. 31, 2004.

Individuals interested in making a private donation, can contribute to the "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" banquet relief account at Merchants Bank of Winona.

For more information about the banquets, contact WSU Professor Ajit Daniel, at 507-457-5228.
