| Four Winona State University faculty members receive honors in this year's edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, 2004.
The faculty members are: Joell Bjorke, professor of business administration; Gloria McVay, assistant professor of accounting; Thomas Nalli, professor of chemistry; and Susan Sefkow, professor of psychology.
Who's Who Among America's Teachers is the one recognition program in the education field where the students have the opportunity to honor the teachers who have most significantly impacted their lives. Assistant Professor Gloria McVay said the award means a lot coming from the students whose lives she hopes to influence.
"I think students have a great barometer when it comes to assessing a professor's commitment to them; sensing that the professor cares about them as individuals," said McVay. "That allows us to be imperfect as teachers while still being able to reach the student on an individual level."
Professor Thomas Nalli echoes these sentiments.
"It feels the same as when a student expresses thanks to me for being a good professor," said Nalli. "That is my primary work function; to help students learn. So when a student expresses appreciation it feels great. It literally makes my day."
Professor Joell Bjorke said receiving the award was flattering and that she enjoys the opportunity to interact with students in the classroom as well as during academic advising.
Professor Susan Sefkow said this kind of recognition helps to validate an instructor's efforts.
"It is always heartwarming when students go out of their way to let you know that you've had a meaningful impact on their lives," said Sefkow, "and that the students both recognize and appreciate a faculty member's efforts to do so."
The approximately 156,000 teachers featured in the current edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers are among our nation's best and most respected teachers. |
