Anonymous $75,000 Donation Establishes WSU Memorial Scholarship

Winona State University receives an anonymous $75,000 gift in memory of Dr. Lawrence Brynestad, former pastor at Central Lutheran Church, in Winona.

The gift establishes the Dr. Lawrence E. Brynestad Memorial Scholarship, which will award two $1,500 scholarships to outstanding entering students at Winona State University.

Dr. Darrell Krueger, president of Winona State University, praised the Brynestad gift and said, “This is a tremendous gift to the university and a wonderful opportunity for Winona State students.” Krueger added, “We are pleased and thankful when benefactors recognize our efforts and take positive steps to help us achieve our mission of improving our world through quality education for students.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must: be a graduate, from a Winona County high school with a minimum G.P.A of 3.2 and be in the top 10% of the recipient’s graduating class; be an incoming undergraduate enrolled full-time with a minimum of twelve credits at Winona State University; be supported by two letters of recognition from the applicant’s community describing both character and dedication to the community; write a one to two page essay describing his or her work in school and the community and their personal philosophy and aspirations; and demonstrate continuing service to the community of a non-athletic nature.

Dr. Brynestad, also known as “Dr. B.,” headed the Central Lutheran Church, formerly the Norwegian Lutheran Church, from 1941 until 1965.  During Brynestad’s tenure as pastor, the sanctuary at the corner of Wabasha and Huff was built.  The Dr. Lawrence E. Brynestad Scholarship Fund will honor Dr. Byrnestad’s character, life and service to the Winona area and his dedication to education and Christianity.
