The Winonan began in 1922 as the official student newspaper of Winona State Teacher’s College.
As the college has changed, so has the Winonan. Our paper became a learning tool of the journalism department and was located in the basement of Phelps Hall. Eventually, the newspaper moved to the Kryzsko Commons student union building. During the 1980s and well into the 1990s, the Winonan was a vital publication and learning tool for the students at Winona State University. In the late 1990s and early into the new century, the Winonan tried to maintain its learning experience status but the majority of the Winonan’s employees were mass communication students and the business angle of the Winonan wasn’t given as much importance as it is today. At the start of the 2004-2005 school year, this all changed. Following years of bad advertising and business practice, the newspaper’s internal structure changed. Now separate, the business department and editorial department control their respective sides of the newspaper and come together to publish a weekly product for the students of Winona State University.
