Folk-rock trio Guster hits Winona State University's McCown gymnasium April 22. Tickets will be approximately $20 and will go on sale in early April.

The Boston folk-rock trio, Guster, will perform at Winona State University’s McCown gymnasium Friday, April 22.

Guster accepted the $30,000 spring concert bid, plus an additional $500 for their opening act.

Joe Reed, University Programming Activities Committee adviser and student activities director, is in the process of lining up Howie Day to perform as well.

Even though Howie Day is still an uncertainty, Reed said he’s “feeling good about it, because Guster and Howie Day have worked together before.”

Reed said if it doesn’t work out, ticket prices will be reduced.

Ticket prices, with Howie Day, will cost approximately $20 and will go on sale in early April. Tickets will be sold at the UPAC office.

The first week of sales will be open only to Winona State students. Tickets will then open to the public.

Reed said he would like to sell out the concert to only Winona State students.

The athletic department, Reed said, was cooperative in working out scheduling conflicts and allowing UPAC access to the gym during spring practices.

Ryan Flynn, sophomore international studies major, is excited for the concert.

Flynn has been a Guster fan for three and a half years and first saw the band in concert during the summer of 2003 at the Minnesota Zoo. He said he is a fan of Guster because their music is original, they are high energy, but still natural on stage, and they give great live performances.

“I think that anyone and everyone can find something about Guster they enjoy,” Flynn said.

According to their Web site, Guster hit the East Coast music scene in the late 1990s.

The group achieves their sound with two acoustic guitars and a bongo set.

Guster opened for Dave Matthews Band during the group’s summer 2004 tour and has also toured with singer John Mayer.

Their 1994 independent record debut, Parachute, and their second effort, Goldfly, sold over 40,000 copies through word of mouth alone.

Guster released their third album “Lost and Gone Forever” in 1999 and their forth CD, “Keep it Together,” in 2003.
