Winona State University’s Department of Outreach & Continuing Education presents Economic Summit 2008, co-sponsored by Merchants National Bank, from 8 a.m. to noon today at the Tau Conference Center, 511 Hilbert Street, Winona.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Barry Asmus, a senior economist with the National Center for Policy Analysis.
In his opinion, the current economic situation should be viewed from a long-term perspective.
He will explain the “Six Unstoppable Trends” that are impacting America’s business and its economy and why they are still very relevant.
Some results of these powerful long-term trends are: a strong stock market; low unemployment; low inflation; high labor productivity; record economic growth; and consumer net worth at all-time highs.
Asmus will present strategies on how companies and communities of the 21st century must be positioned to capitalize on these trends.
He will also identify the benefits and drawbacks to globalization.
Many cities across the nation have navigated these economic shifts by reinventing themselves.
Drawing from these examples and his research on Minnesota entrepreneurs, he will provide thoughts on how our region might prepare for a different age.
The summit also includes “Business Sentiment Monitor Results,” with Dr. Mike Wenz and a business panel presentation facilitated by WSU’s President Judith Ramaley. Cost to attend is $50. The registration deadline is Wednesday, April 16. For more information call 507-457-5080.
