The Winona State University track and field team placed third at the Carleton Quadrangular on Friday and won 10 of 19 events at the St. Mary’s Invitational on Saturday.
At Carleton, Jenny Bradford broke the WSU record in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:39.14 — a full second faster than the previous record.
Chelsey Brown won the shot put with a throw of 40-5 and the weight throw with a toss of 50-10 ¾.
“Chelsey had an outstanding meet for us,” WSU coach Mason Rebarchek said. “All of our throwers did well this week.”
Jess Devine won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.81 seconds, Nikki Olsen won the 55-meter dash in 7.62 seconds, and Nicci Johnson was victorious in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 26.34 seconds.
At the SMU invite, Rebarchek was pleased with the 4-by-400 relay team.
“They ran an excellent race for us,” Rebarchek said. “They broke the facility record at SMU with their time and just barely missed the school record.”
Lisa Meyer, Nicci Johnson, Beth Braun and Bradford ran the 400 in 4:03.74, missing the school record by .12 of a second.
“I thought the team exceeded my expectations so far this season,” Rebarchek said. “I didn’t think we could put up these numbers this early in the season.”
The two meets in back-to-back days are a good indicator of what WSU will experience at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships at the end of this month.
Rebarchek believes last weekend was a way for his team to see what they need to do to win the conference.
“We learned a lot this weekend,” Rebarchek said. “I think things are starting to come together for us now.”
