Quincy Henderson, senior starting forward for the Winona State University men’s basketball team, was arrested Sunday, Jan. 27, under pending assault charges against his girlfriend of three years.
On Monday, Jan. 28, he was charged with two counts of misdemeanor domestic assault and released from custody.
Larry Holstad, athletic director at Winona State, released a statement saying that no athletic policies had been violated, and Henderson would not be suspended
However, he was asked to sit out of Saturday night’s game against Upper Iowa University, based on a decision made entirely by Winona State Coach Mike Leaf.
Leaf said it had nothing to do with a possible suspension, and the entire athletic department is supporting Henderson.
According to both Henderson and the woman, this is not the first altercation they have had. Four or five unreported incidents in the past litter their relationship.
Police reports say that personnel responded to a call to the 350 block of West Howard Street, where they found the woman crying.
She said that Henderson had accused her of cheating the previous weekend, and had pushed her into a couch twice, causing two bumps on the head.
After interviewing the woman, police went to Henderson’s house in the 100 block of East Howard Street, where he said that the woman had tried to slap him and jump over a coffee table to kick him, at which point he pushed her out of the way in self-defense.
Police have yet to release the name of the woman involved.
