MnSCU asks Student Senate to examine on-campus, off-campus housing

Most students who have lived on-campus and off-campus could give a list of the benefits and differences between the two.
At Winona State University’s Student Senate meeting Feb. 6, Academic Affairs Chair Josh Martin proposed that Treasurer Travis Carlson and the Student Services Committee research and conduct a housing study regarding the amenities of both on-campus and off-campus living.
The study, according to Martin, needs to be completed one week before the MSUSA Conference in March.
A concern was expressed at February’s MSUSA Conference in St. Paul, Minn., that schools within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system were not giving costs or alternatives to on-campus living to incoming students.
At Wednesday’s Student Senate meeting, Student Services Chair AJ Schuler announced during his committee report that more information regarding the housing study would be brought up at the Student Senate meeting on Feb. 20.

Feehan conducts smoking forum, progress on alcohol discussion

After the passing of the Freedom to Breathe Act of 2007 in Minnesota last October, students and members of the Winona community are meeting to discuss what direction Winona will be taking in accordance with the new law.
On Feb. 19 at 8:30 pm at the Smaug stage, Feehan and Education Sen. Terri Burke will be having a discussion forum open to all students regarding smoking on Winona State University campus.
The smoking forum comes after the success of Feehan’s previous alcohol forum in January.
On Jan. 31, Winona State University Student Senate president Emily Feehan invited Winona State students to a discussion forum about alcohol use in Winona amongst college-aged students.
Although the turnout was small, said Feehan, the discussion went very well.
Feehan reported that in the near future there will be another meeting with the St. Mary’s University student body president and Winona major Jerry Miller at Mugby Junction on Huff Street, which is open to the public.
