A pair of athletes from the Winona State University women’s track and field team finished their seasons at the NCAA Division II championships March 14-15 in Mankato, Minn.
WSU senior Jess Devine qualified for nationals in the 60-meter hurdles with the 16th-best time of 8.83 seconds. Freshman Rebecca Stier qualified eighth in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 1 ¼ inches.
Neither athlete qualified for the national finals. Devine turned in the third-best, non-qualifying time with a 9.03 in a preliminary heat. Stier, meanwhile, faulted on all three attempts in flighted competition.
As a team, the Warriors finished the indoor season No. 17 in the DII women’s power rankings and No. 8 in the North Central regional rankings. The Warriors wrapped up the indoor team season with a fourth-place tie at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 29-March 1 at Bemidji State.
The Warriors set a school record in the distance medley relay on the first day of the NSIC Championships. The Warriors relay team of Allie Glasbrenner, Jennifer Bradford, Michelle Schreiner and Jenna Southworth turned in a time of 12:34.45 and placed third in the championship relay. That effort shaved 8.53 seconds from the previous WSU record set in 1993.
Lindsey Derby placed second in the 55-meter dash and Jennifer Bradford set a Winona State University record in the 600-meter dash on the final day of competition.
Derby ran the 55-meter dash in 7.34 seconds for the top Winona State finish. Bradford placed fifth in the 600-meter dash with a Winona State record time of 1:37.92.
Chelsea Brown had the Warriors’ only other top-three finish as she placed third in the shot put with a toss of 42-11 3/4.
