The few years you spend at Winona State can become a financial burden, but the university has much more to offer a student than an empty wallet.
Scholarships, academic and physical contests and travel studies around the world allow each student something more than read from a textbook or studying in a lecture hall. These choices are all around and easily available.
Winona State offers many scholarships for students of all ages and financial standings. From scholarships in specific departments to general academic awards, there is a lot of money available to Winona State students.
The general scholarships are, for the most part, based on financial need of the student. One particular scholarship, the Friends Scholarship, can be given to a student who has completed two academic years with 60 credit hours.
Getting a scholarship through the school is not the only option.. Thousands of Web sites are available on the Internet with a variety of scholarships available to college students.
Contests and activities are nonstop on campus. One of the major events, Relay for Life, will be held on April 14. The event, a 14-hour overnight walk, is a fund-raiser to help support cancer research.
This year marks the first annual Beth Kunce Memorial
Walk. The event is put on by Phi Theta Chi sorority in honor of a sister who passed away six years ago. The money raised will benefit Special Olympics Walk. Travel study is another option because it not only look great on a resume, but also broaden a person’s view on the world. Winona State offers financial aid to qualifing students who study abroad. There are currently 190 students registered for travel study programs. Each of the programs begins with an academic foundation and usually fulfills university studies requirements.
The educational experience is then strengthened by the exposure to the different locales.
If there is something missing at Winona State that you want, you have the recourses available to start it. Start a club or fundraiser. Bring a new sports team or academic club to Winona State.
Once you have at least eight people who wish to form a club, you must decide whether you wish to be recognized as a student club on campus. To be recognized, you must meet a list of criteria found on the Winona State Web site.
Once the criteria is met, a copy of the constitution and club directory form must be turned into Rotney O’Shea, the vice president of Student Senate. Student Senate will then review the constitution for a period of at least one week. At the Student Senate meeting a motion to approve the club’s constitution will then be entered.
Students can always find something to do just by looking at the bulletin boards throughout campus.
With the availability of recourses and people at Winona State everyone should be able to find something they are interested in.
