The Winona State University men’s tennis team will return from a three-week break March 30 looking to snap a six-match losing streak.
After starting the season 3-1, the Warriors lost eight of their next nine.
WSU (4-9) last played March 9, concluding a five-match trip in Kansas with a 6-3 loss against Mesa State (Co.). The Warriors picked up all their points at singles, getting wins from Gage Davidson, Stuart Booth, and Taylor Rens.
WSU might benefit from a change of scenery. Having lost its past six — all on the road — WSU is scheduled to play its next two matches and three of its four remaining regular-season matches in Winona.
The women’s team earned a conference sweep March 16 in its return from a winless five-match Kansas road trip.
The Warriors (5-10) defeated Minnesota State Moorhead 6-3 and Bemidji State 8-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Sunday.
WSU’s Heather Pierce, Mary Hesterman and Holly Peltier all won four matches on the day. Pierce and Hesterman captured two No. 1 doubles matches, and Pierce won both of her No. 1 singles matches.
Before the Kansas trip, Pierce was named NSIC Player of the Week on March 5, helping the Warriors to an NSIC split the weekend of Feb. 29, going undefeated in four matches.
Pierce did not lose a game in a straight-set win over Northern State. She then won 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 against St. Benedict’s.
Pierce also won both of her No. 1 doubles matches during that stretch.
