It‘s lights, cameras and action once again for the students of Winona State University.
Following tradition, The Technical Support department has teamed up with the Apple Corporation to host the seventh-annual MAC Make-a-Movie contest.
Each year, Apple serves as the benefactor for different versions of this contest across the United States.
The only requirements for these contests are that films must be three to five minutes long and they must be created, edited and processed with Apple programs.
The winners of each school’s contests then compete in regional championships and national competitions.
Prizes provided by Apple for winners and attendants include cash and merchandise totaling to over $500.
With the lights turned down, the five best films created and submitted by Winona State students will be shown on the big screen. The rumblings of laughter and the gasps of suspense are sure to ring through Somsen Hall.
During intermission, snacks and beverages are provided to add to the excitement and atmosphere. Also during intermission, voting polls will be available for categories such as most original and best plot.
Last year’s biggest winner, “The Phantom of the Studio,” created by Bea Salisbury, Brad Bartelson and Rachel Salisbury won Critic’s Choice and was the runner up for Best Use of Technology and Best Storyline.
This clamation film similar to the story “The Phantom and the Opera” was a huge success and an audience favorite.
Other winners included a film about students and medication titled “Incurious,” by Jason Staskus, took home the award for Best Use of Technology, and a story of two determined men intent on going to the zoo produced by Matthew Corcoran Daniel Richard, Lewis Kewlman and Allana Gacke called “Safari Adventure,” won the award for Best Storyline.
Both dramas and slapsticks held their own, as it is predicted they will again this year.
Numerous films ranging in all genres have been reviewed for Winona State’s entertainment, and it is just beginning to pay off.
It is this kind of happenings that make this university more than just a college.
It is the numerous programs and activities that take place throughout the year in various places that not only help students appreciate the diversity of talents that they encompass, but help the student body also feel more like a community.
“Although I do not have the kind of time that it takes to make a film like those that won last year, I am really excited to see what others can come up with this year,” said Brianna McDonough, music education major. “I think this is going to be one of the events that I really remember. It should be a perfect time to appreciate those who have the talent and passion for creative films. I am really hoping that I can enter next year.”
