Natural is a word that should not be used in a makeup commercial.
A few weeks ago I happened to see just such a commercial from Almay with commentary that said, “Show off what nature gave you.”
Quite ironic.
I hope I’m not the only one who is put off by the message this ad communicates.
It is plain to see many advertisements utilize women who have to work hard to look a certain way and it is often portrayed as “normal.”
These ads are sneaky in promoting the same message. The basic message, if you’re unsure, is that wearing makeup is normal, and those who don’t look different in a negative way.
I find it atrocious for Almay to promote this ad that equates natural beauty with makeup.
Girls do not need makeup. I tell my girlfriend all the time she looks gorgeous and she doesn’t need makeup—period.
Why would I want to get used to an image that isn’t her? Natural beauty outdoes anything makeup can do and she looks stellar without it.
How many people have you known that wear makeup so often that when they don’t apply it, they look like a different person? I know I can count over ten.
This isn’t to say girls look worse with makeup applied. I’m just pointing out that no one should feel compelled to apply makeup every day before going out, thinking that to do otherwise is unacceptable.
I shudder to think of how colossal the makeup industry will be ten years from now.
I know girls were obsessed with makeup when I was in middle school, but it seems they’re more obsessed now.
I’m happy to see ads using more natural bodies than the almost-unattainable of models and celebrities.
My own opinion: flaunt what you have and don’t try to cover it up because I want to see you for who you are, not what cosmetic companies want you to be.
