Welcome to the Program in Women's & Gender Studies.
Women's & Gender Studies at Winona State is a multidisciplinary program that looks at the lives and experiences of women through many disciplines--history, art, psychology, economics and public health, among others. Women's & GendervStudies students explore the ways in which gender shapes women's and men's experiences in various global cultures. They also consider how cultural differences affect women's lives within multicultural societies.
The Women's & Gender Studies Program is committed to integrating classroom and community, and to preparing students to be active citizens in their communities. Women's & Gender Studies students apply feminist theories and analyses to current social issues, and develop the skills necessary for active citizenship.
With feminist theory and citizenship at the heart of the Women's & Gender Studies curriculum, students learn about the gender dimensions of cultures and institutions, as well as avenues for social action.

Employment Opportunities
(1999-2000)
Students who complete a B.A. minor in Women's & Gender Studies learn skills and knowledge useful to employers in business, government, education, and health care. These are some of the many jobs now held by graduates with minors in Women's & Gender Studies:
journalist specializing in women's issues; nurse, doctor, or therapist with expertise in women's health; business entrepreneur; high school or college teacher; supervisor or counselor in a women's shelter.
The Women's & Gender Studies Program is run by a faculty director in consultation with an advisory board consisting of faculty, staff and students. Students are encouraged to get involved in this process and to take leadership roles in developing special programs for campus and community groups. A variety of women's organizations (such as FORGE) and programs in the area provide opportunities for activism. (see news articles) The Women's Studies Program is a nucleus on campus for events and activities that focus on women and gender issues.
