Dr. Wang Ping will visit WSU on Monday, September 24, co-sponsored by Women's Studies, WILL, and the John S. Lucas Great River Reading Series.

Wang Ping will lead a brown bag discussion at noon in Purple Rooms 105-106, Kryzsko Commons. She will be discussing her latest book, Aching for Beauty, which focuses on the legacy of Chinese foot binding and womenıs modern-day quests for beauty. (Please bring a lunch.)

Wang Ping will read from her poetry at 3:00 pm, Purple Rooms 104 and 105, Kryzsko.

Wang Ping was born on the island of Dinghai, in the East China Sea. She grew up during Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution, in which only peasants were allowed to attend college. Accordingly she went to the countryside for "reeducation," working in the fields 12 to 15 hours a day for three years before she could apply for entrance. Dr. Wang graduated from Beijing University with a degree in English Literature. She came to New York City at the age of 27 and worked in restaurants and a law office by day while attending school at night, completing her PhD in comparative literature from NYU. She has published a novel, a collection of short stories, a collection of poems, and a book on Chinese footbinding. Wang Ping currently teaches creative writing at Macalester College.
