New Faculty

The WSU Chemistry Department welcomes Dr. Hannah Leverentz. Dr. Leverentz earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Minnesota. She has experience teaching as she comes to us from a faculty appointment at Tusculum College in Tennessee. She will be teaching in the Physical and General Chemistry sequences beginning this fall.

Retirement

The Chemistry Department would like to congratulate Dr. Bill Ng on his retirement at the end of the Spring 2016 term. A celebration was held in April to honor Bill and his immense service to the department and to the University. The Chemistry Department thanks Bill for everything he has done during his career including service as a strongly contributing member of the IFO board of directors. We also thank him for his service to countless students over many years. Thank you, Bill!

Experimental Biology

Mike Allen, Kacie Nelson, Ally Guthrie, and Rachel Dahl attended the Experimental Biology meeting in Boston, MA. They presented the results of their undergraduate research projects at this conference.

New Faculty

The Chemistry Department welcomes two new faculty members, Dr. Jon Mauser and Dr. Joe West.

Dr. Mauser earned his Ph. D. in Biochemistry from the University of Oregon. He comes to us after a Visiting Assistant Professorship at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, OR. We welcome Dr. Mauser as a new contributor to our Biochemistry curriculum. 

Dr. West earned his Ph. D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of North Dakota. He most recently spent a year as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Physical Chemistry at Hamilton College in upstate New York. Dr. West will be teaching Inorganic Chemistry and general chemistry courses. Welcome, Dr. West. 

American Chemical Society National Meeting

The Chemistry Department sent a contingent of 10 students to the American Chemical Society National Meeting in Denver, Colorado held March 23-25, 2015. Dr. Kopitzke, Dr. Lee, and Dr. Nalli accompanied the students who presented posters of their research as summarized below.

  • Grant Borkowski and Kyle Dubiak each presented posters on their polymer chemistry research with Dr. Kopitzke.
  • Elizabeth Daniels, Ashley Shuck, Alix Overgard, and Reid Hein presented a poster on their diabetes-related biochemistry research with Dr. Lee.
  • Brian Montz, John Schultz, and Alix Overgard presented posters on their organic chemistry research with Dr. Nalli.
  • Most travel expenses for the students were paid by WSU Student Travel Grants with additional support coming from the WSU College of Science and Engineering and the WSU Student Senate

Annual Ramaley Research Celebration and Creative Scholarship

WSU Chemistry Research will be on display at the Ramaley Research Celebration and Creative Scholarship on April 15, 2015. Please stop by to support our students and their work.

WSU Chemistry research was displayed at the Ramaley Research Celebration and Creative Scholarship on April 16, 2014 and the Winchell Undergraduate Research Symposium held on April 26, 2014 at St. Mary’s University. Thank you to all of these students and their hard work.

Experimental Biology Conference

Katie Seehusen, Maria Noterman and Mallory Villeneuve presented their work at the Experimental Biology conference in San Diego April 26-30, 2014. A special congratulation goes out to Katie Seehusen who was awarded a competitive travel grant through the conference.

Organic Chemistry Courses

The Chemistry Department welcomed Dr. Vincent Sichula to the department to teach organic chemistry courses with us this year.
