DESCRIPTION:In honor of Minnesota FoodShare Month—a time dedicated to fighting hunger and restocking local food shelves—the College of Business has challenged the 4 other academic colleges at WSU for a Colleges Food Drive Competition throughout March. \n\n\n\nThis food drive will help stock and raise money for our on-campus food shelf\, the Warrior Cupboard. \n\n\n\nHow It Works\n\n\n\nDrop off food and household items to your Dean’s office\, then earn one point per item. \n\n\n\nYou can also earn one point per one dollar donated. DESCRIPTION:In honor of Women’s History Month\, join us on March 19 for a reading of the play “My Name Is Rachel Corrie” (edited by Alan Rickman and Katharine Viner)\, with performances interspersed throughout. \n\n\n\nThis play excerpts the diaries of Rachel Corrie\, who was murdered in 2003 by Israeli forces while protecting a Palestinian family. \n\n\n\nOpening performances are by Sana Wazwaz and Andrea Shaker. DESCRIPTION:On March 27\, spend the evening with Kao Kalia Yang\, author of the recently published “Where Rivers Part: A Story of My Mother’s Life.” Yang will deliver a keynote and read from her book\, as part of the John S. Lucas Great River Reading Series. \n\n\n\nThis event is sponsored by WSU’s departments of English; Global Studies & World Languages; Music; Social Work; and Women\, Gender\, & Sexuality Studies. This event is also sponsored by WSU’s Office of Equity & Inclusive Excellence and the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. \n\n\n\n    Learn More about the Great River Reading Series\n\n\n\n\n\n    \n        \n            \n                        \n            \n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nKao Kalia Yang is a Hmong-American writer\, filmmaker\, and teacher.  \n\n\n\nHer work crosses audiences and genres and has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the Chautauqua Prize\, the PEN USA literary awards\, the Dayton’s Literary Peace Prize\, Kirkus Best Books of the Year\, the Heartland Bookseller’s Award\, and has garnered four Minnesota Book Awards. She was also named the Minnesota Tribune Artist of the Year in 2024. \n\n\n\nKalia was born in the refugee camps of Thailand to a family that escaped the genocide of the Secret War in Laos. She came to America at the age of 6\, and her first book\, “The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir\,” reflects upon this move. A review by Publishers Weekly praises Kalia\, “Yang tells her family’s story with grace; she narrates their struggles\, beautifully weaving in Hmong folklore and culture.” “The Latehomecomer” was the winner of 2 Minnesota Book Awards\, a finalist for the PEN USA Award\, and earned a NEA Big Read title. It is the first Hmong-authored book to gain national distribution from a literary press. \n\n\n\nKalia is the author of “The Song Poet: A Memoir of My Father\,” which won the 2016 Minnesota Book Award\, and it was a finalist for the Dayton’s Literary Peace Prize\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the Chautauqua Prize\, and the PEN USA Award. Commissioned by the Minnesota Opera\, Kalia was also a librettist for The Song Poet Opera. \n\n\n\nShe is also the author of “Somewhere in the Unknown World\,” and her latest\, “Where Rivers Part: A Story of My Mother’s Life.” \n\n\n\nKalia is the author of the children’s books “A Map into the World\,” “The Most Beautiful Thing\,” “The Shared Room\,” “Yang Warriors\,” “From the Tops of the Trees\,” and “The Rock in My Throat\,” which center around Hmong children who live in our world\, who dream and hurt and hope in it. \n\n\n\nLastly\, she is the co-editor of a ground-breaking collection titled “What God Is Honored Here?: Writings on Miscarriage and Infant Loss By and For Native Women and Women of Color.” For her work\, Kalia has been the recipient of McKnight\, Soros\, and Guggenheim Fellowships. \n\n\n\nWhen she’s not in front of an audience inspiring social change and awareness\, Kalia raises twin sons that keep her and her husband busy at their home in Minneapolis. \n\n\n        \n    \n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nContact
