{"id":10206,"date":"2024-08-08T08:56:17","date_gmt":"2024-08-08T13:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/?page_id=10206"},"modified":"2024-08-08T08:56:18","modified_gmt":"2024-08-08T13:56:18","slug":"ensembles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/liberal-arts\/music-department\/ensembles\/","title":{"rendered":"Ensembles\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WSU music students lead rich musical lives with many opportunities to perform as a soloist and in chamber and large ensembles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Band<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Band program offers students many rewarding experiences and performance opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We host concerts that serve the community, participate in regional tours, and work with guest performers and composers from around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students can earn 1 credit per semester by participating in either of our main ensembles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Symphonic Wind Ensemble<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Symphonic Band<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Symphonic Wind Ensemble<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>The primary ensemble in the WSU Band program is the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. It rehearses 3 days a week and performs in 4 concerts and 2 commencement ceremonies per year.<\/p>\n<p>Private instruction is also offered for all Symphonic Wind Ensemble students.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Symphonic Band<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>The Symphonic Band rehearses 1 evening a week and performs in 4 concerts per year.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Students also perform in the pep band, a secondary responsibility, at select football, volleyball, and basketball games.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our program offers a lot more than just ensembles. Here is some helpful information as you prepare to get involved in the Band program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If students are interested in joining an ensemble but do not own a musical instrument, the WSU Music Department has a limited supply of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments that can be used free of charge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The requirement to become involved in this program is to complete a brief audition meeting. These meetings are simply a formality used for seating purposes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The concert attire for all band ensembles is concert black. Pep Band attire is provided to all band students free of charge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choir<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Choral program at WSU consists of 3 ensembles which cover a repertoire ranging from from the Renaissance to contemporary choral works. All singers receive 1 undergraduate credit each semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program also has an active American Choral Directors&#8217; Association Student Chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Concert Choir<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Treble Chorus<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-3\">Vocal Chamber Ensemble\u202f<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Concert Choir<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>This large ensemble is open to singers of any voice part.<\/p>\n<p>A voice placement and registration override are required for this course (MUS 243). Contact Dr. Chester if you are interested in joining Concert Choir.<\/p>\n<p>This ensemble satisfies GEP Goal Area 6b and the Large Ensemble requirement for music majors and minors.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Treble Chorus<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>This ensemble is open to treble singers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sopranos<\/li>\n<li>Altos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No previous experience or audition is required to join.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This course (MUS 143) satisfies GEP Goals Areas 6b and 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Vocal Chamber Ensemble\u202f<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>This chamber ensemble is open to singers of any voice part.<\/p>\n<p>Students are selected through a formal audition process. If interested, please email Dr. Chester to arrange an audition time.<\/p>\n<p>This course (MUS 249) satisfies the Small Ensemble Performance requirement for Music Education majors and the Chamber Ensemble requirement for Music Performance majors.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jazz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jazz program offers 2 ensembles, some of the most active performers on campus. Our program is proud to carry on the rich jazz tradition that has been in place here on campus since the 1940s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Jazz Ensemble<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Jazz Combo<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Jazz Ensemble<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>The WSU jazz ensemble is a group of talented musicians selected through audition each year. The group performs various types of jazz and is one of the most active performing groups on campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Jazz Combo<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Jazz Combos help students learn the art of jazz performance and improvisation in a small ensemble setting.<\/p>\n<p>Groups range in size from 4-8 players, and all instrumentalists are welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Each combo performs once each semester, though many groups chose to add additional performances off-campus at various venues.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Friends of Jazz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>WSU Friends of Jazz provides financial assistance for scholarships, tours, recordings, and guest appearances on campus. As a designated program within the WSU Foundation, Friends of Jazz works cooperatively with the WSU Retiree Center and Alumni Relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Become a member of Friends of Jazz to help WSU establish itself as a regional center for jazz in college curriculum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your annual contribution entitles you to free admission to all on-campus jazz performances and a listing in programs as a Friend of Jazz at the following levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Friend: $25-49<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sponsor: $50-99<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patron: $100-499<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Benefactor: $500 and up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To make a financial contribution, please send your name, address, phone number and email to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friends of Jazz<br>c\/o WSU Retiree Center<br>P.O. Box 5838<br>Winona, MN 5598<\/p>\n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Orchestra<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Orchestral program consists of the Chamber Orchestra and String Ensemble.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only do they perform typical orchestra pieces, but the program also incorporates the work of contemporary composers from the surrounding area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musicians will also have travel opportunities to further immerse themselves into the world of music.
