{"id":10402,"date":"2023-10-25T08:56:46","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T13:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/?page_id=10402"},"modified":"2023-11-28T16:04:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T22:04:00","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/liberal-arts\/psychology-department\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Psychology Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psychology students can be involved in different forms of research at WSU such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A neurological lab that allows students to use equipment and learn techniques usually limited to graduate students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research on health behaviors and lifestyle choices of undergraduates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research on psychological side-effects of pharmaceuticals (using animal models for depression and anxiety)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Studies on chronic or genetic childhood disorders and the impact they have on family members<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clinical research on aggression and father-son relationships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Participate as a Subject<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find opportunities to participate in research projects posted on a bulletin board outside Phelps Hall 219.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take a Class<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many classes give some background and experience in research. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PSY 308 and 309 allow students to learn basic research skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 408 (Advanced Experimental) allows students to design and carry out an individual research project as part of a course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many other courses like neuroscience have research or laboratory components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Work as a Research Assistant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many faculty have active research programs and welcome students to be research assistants on their projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students can receive independent study credit (PSY 400) for these activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talk to the faculty member you are interested in working with during the advising\/registration period to plan for a future semester. Keep in mind that faculty may not have a current project or position available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Propose a Study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If students have their own research project or topic they are interested in pursuing, they can:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Look into taking Advanced Experimental Psychology (PSY 408) and discuss the idea with the instructor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approach a faculty member about sponsoring a student project as an Independent Study (PSY 400).
