{"id":11874,"date":"2026-05-06T13:29:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T18:29:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/?page_id=11874"},"modified":"2026-05-06T13:29:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T18:29:22","slug":"program-admission","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/nursing-health-sciences\/undergraduate-nursing-department\/program-admission\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate Nursing Program Admission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Undergraduate Nursing program has a competitive admissions process for the Pre-Licensure Nursing major.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also an admission process for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/nursing-health-sciences\/undergraduate-nursing-department\/program-admission\/#completion-program\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#completion-program\">RN-BS Completion Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/outlook.office.com\/book\/UndergraduateNursingatWinonaStateUniveristy@MinnState.edu\/?ismsaljsauthenabled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schedule an advising appointment<\/a> in person or online to get your Nursing admission questions answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pre-Licensure Nursing Program Admission Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Admission Criteria<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students must meet all requirements before <a href=\"#apply-pre-licensure\">applying to the WSU Pre-Licensure Nursing program<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two admissions routes: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/nursing-health-sciences\/undergraduate-nursing-department\/program-admission\/#direct-admission\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#direct-admission\">Direct Admission<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/nursing-health-sciences\/undergraduate-nursing-department\/program-admission\/#holistic-admission\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#holistic-admission\">Holistic Admission<\/a>. Most students go through the Holistic Admission process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Undergraduate Nursing Department policies and requirements are subject to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"direct-admission\">Direct Admission Criteria<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Direct admission guarantees admission to the nursing major for students with exceptional ACT\/SAT scores who earn excellent college grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students who meet the eligibility requirements may&nbsp;<strong>apply no earlier than their first semester at WSU<\/strong>&nbsp;to begin the major in their second semester.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block accordion\">\n        <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Initial_Eligibility\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Initial_Eligibility\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Initial Eligibility        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <ul>\n<li>Have a composite ACT of 27 or above, or SAT of 1280 or above<\/li>\n<li>Be a new entering first semester freshman<\/li>\n<li>Declaring a pre-nursing major when enrolling at WSU<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Direct Admission Agreement must be completed within the first 2 weeks of your first semester as a degree-seeking student at WSU.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Maintain_Direct_Admission_Status\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Maintain_Direct_Admission_Status\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Maintain Direct Admission Status        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>Direct Admission status guarantees admission when these requirements are maintained:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cumulative college GPA of at least 3.75 at time of application to nursing major<\/li>\n<li>Earn a grade of C or better in all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/nursing-health-sciences\/undergraduate-nursing-department\/program-admission\/#prerequisites\">nursing prerequisite classes<\/a><\/li>\n<li>No withdrawal from or repeat of nursing prerequisite classes once enrolled at WSU\n<ul>\n<li>If you completed grade-bearing college credits while in high school and received a grade of W, D, or F in a nursing prerequisite course, you may repeat the course prior to your first day of class as a new entering first semester student at WSU without invalidating your eligibility for Direct Admission<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Complete at least 10 hours of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/nursing-health-sciences\/undergraduate-nursing-department\/program-admission\/#community-service\">community service work<\/a> per semester while a degree-seeking student at WSU<\/li>\n<li>See assigned WSU nursing advisor every semester<\/li>\n<li>Complete an interview about interest in nursing with assigned advisor prior to application<\/li>\n<li>Meet all eligibility requirements for application to the major no later than the end of the your third semester at WSU (at least 45 completed college credits are required to apply for admission)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Loss_of_Direct_Admission_Status\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Loss_of_Direct_Admission_Status\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Loss of Direct Admission Status        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>If you do not maintain direct admission status, you may apply through Holistic Admission.<\/p>\n<p>You must first complete the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/warriorspace.winona.edu\/ProcessDirector\/form.aspx?pid=cbc76cfa-e332-489a-a868-237dcf390893&amp;formid=eb972553-290b-49ec-987a-a5fa07f86d53&amp;forminstid=&amp;tlid=&amp;wfinstid=&amp;prinstid=&amp;linkwfid=&amp;linkprid=&amp;testmode=&amp;nottask=&amp;CTConfigure=&amp;CTRun=&amp;CTContainerFORMID=&amp;CTContainerWFID=&amp;CTContainerRULEID=&amp;CTContainerPRID=&amp;parsecontrols=&amp;completepage=&amp;completepageprompt=&amp;completetext=&amp;findtask=&amp;INFOMSG=&amp;caseinstid=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Declaration of Major\/Minor Form<\/a> to change major code to \u201cNursing Candidate Holistic \u2013 PNHA\u201d to apply through Holistic Admission.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"holistic-admission\">Holistic Admission Criteria<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This route is for students without direct admission status and transfer students. View the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Personal-Statement-Instructions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">personal statement instructions<\/a> (PDF) for more information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prerequisites\">Prerequisite Courses&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Admitted and declared pre-nursing students must have at least 12 college credits post high school graduation and complete prerequisite courses to be eligible to apply to the Pre-Licensure (Generic Option) Nursing major.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When applying, you must have&nbsp;completed 45 college credits and earned a grade of C or better in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At least 4 of 5 Natural Sciences (at least 3 lab courses, not including Nutrition). Up to 5 hours may be completed during the preceding break.<\/p>\n<p>These hours may be completed in any community. The remaining hours must be completed between the first day of the semester and the application due date and must be completed in the Winona and Rochester communities.<\/p>\n<p>Your volunteer hours do not need to be related to healthcare. You may not count hours for which you received payment or course credit.<\/p>\n<p>You may not count time you spend doing things for family or friends that you would do anyway. Be sure to enter information accurately\u2014double-check spelling of email addresses.<\/p>\n<p>All hours must be submitted through this process.<\/p>\n<p>You will receive a confirmation email when your hours are submitted.<\/p>\n<p>You are responsible for not only communicating with WSU and your community partner, but also verifying volunteer hours by the deadline. Verify this information under the My Submitted Forms tab in WarriorSpace.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"additional-requirements\">Additional Requirements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must complete the following requirements before you begin the upper division Nursing major: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be certified as a nursing assistant, and be listed as \u201cactive\u201d on a Nursing Assistant Registry within the United States<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be certified in CPR for One &amp; Two Person, Infant, Child and Adult (only American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS))<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide a copy of CNA &amp; CPR certifications to the Department of Undergraduate Nursing through the clinical compliance portal (students receive access to this portal at the required clinical compliance meeting. Clinical compliance must be completed no later than&nbsp;<strong>Jan. 4<\/strong>&nbsp;in order to receive an access code to register.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student advising is done on a rolling basis, and seats are limited each semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Admission Criteria<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A DARS cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required for admission into the RN-BS Completion Program. A 2.5 cumulative grade point average is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a student has less than 2.5 GPA, then the most recent 50 credits are counted to determine if a 2.5 has been met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students whose GPA is less than 2.5 are encouraged to meet with the Nursing Department Chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An RN license is required within the first semester (determined by advisor).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applicants who received associate degrees in nursing prior to 1985 and graduates of diploma nursing programs should contact the Nursing Department Chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Complete Remaining Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will
