The Mathematics Core requirements expose students to a diverse range of mathematical topics and provide in-depth, rigorous study in selected areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students choose from electives which further broaden their understanding of mathematics. They will also complete a series of courses, including an independent project that supplements their mathematical knowledge or complete another major or minor. Typically, a PhD is required for the academic work of providing others a university-level education while pursuing your own mathematical and academic research interests.<\/p>\n<p>The WSU undergraduate program in Mathematics is your first step on this journey.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                            <div class=\"h3\">Advising Resources<\/div>\n                        <\/div>\n            \n<div class=\"wsu-block accordion\">\n        <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"General_Advice\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"General_Advice\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            General Advice        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <ul>\n<li>Plan to take MATH 312 (Multivariable Calculus) and MATH 327 (Foundations of Mathematics) as early as possible. Once you\u2019ve taken these courses, you take almost any elective course.<\/li>\n<li>Apply for REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) in the early spring of your 2nd and 3rd years.<\/li>\n<li>Near the end of your 2nd year, start thinking seriously about what classes you liked best and about an independent research project. Talk to your advisor and favorite instructors for ideas and guidance. Make sure to start the project on or before the first week of your senior year. Don\u2019t wait until your last semester!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Graduate_School\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Graduate_School\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Graduate School        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <ul>\n<li>Go on the graduate school visits (organized by the department each fall) starting in your 2nd year<\/li>\n<li>In Spring of your 3rd year, talk to your advisor about whether the\u00a0GRE-Math subject exam\u00a0is appropriate for you and your plans<\/li>\n<li>Take the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/gre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general GRE<\/a>\u00a0early fall semester of senior year<\/li>\n<li>Before Thanksgiving break: have a handful of schools identified, a draft of your personal statement written, and ask your favorite instructors for letters of recommendation<\/li>\n<li>Apply!
