{"id":12704,"date":"2024-09-17T09:57:33","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T14:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/?page_id=12704"},"modified":"2026-02-24T09:49:50","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T15:49:50","slug":"rachel-haug","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/liberal-arts\/music-department\/faculty\/rachel-haug\/","title":{"rendered":"Rachel Haug\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A freelance flutist, orchestral musician, and private instructor in the Minneapolis area, Rachel Haug began her teaching appointment at Winona State University in 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to providing one-on-one flute instruction, she also leads the Flute Choir and guides aspiring music educators in the flute portion of Woodwind Techniques. Dr. Haug also maintains an active private flute studio in the Twin Cities, and her students are frequently accepted to All-State Band and Orchestra, summer festivals, and other honors ensembles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a performer, Dr. Haug serves as Principal Flute with both the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and the Winona Symphony Orchestra while also enjoying an active solo career. She has performed as a featured soloist with groups including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Winona Symphony Orchestra (2025)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>at the Upper Midwest Flute Association&#8217;s Flute Fest (2024)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (2023)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>at the Minnesota Music Educators Convention (2023)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plymouth Concert Band (2022)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>at the National Band Association\u2014Wisconsin Chapter Convention (2020)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, she also performed Julia Wolfe\u2019s\u00a0<em>Oxygen\u00a0<\/em>as a member of a 144-piece flute choir at the National Flute Association Convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Haug earned her DMA and MM in flute performance from The Ohio State University, where she studied with Katherine Borst Jones, and BA from Luther College under the instruction of Dr. Carol Hester. Her research,\u00a0<em>An Introduction to Twentieth-Century Flute Music by Norwegian Composers,\u00a0<\/em>seeks to broaden awareness of the available flute repertoire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Haug is featured on the Navona Records recording Here at the River, on the Naxos recordings Network and Rest, and in the 2008 Emmy Award-winning production, Christmas at Luther.
