There are programs where you would take a course in the language of that country and take all the rest of your courses in English at the host institution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To improve your language skills, it is better to choose a program that teaches more of your courses in the country\u2019s language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Housing &amp; Meals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you live on campus, view the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/student-life\/housing-dining\/next-steps\/housing-policies-faqs\/\">WSU Housing Policies<\/a> to learn about canceling your housing agreement during your semester abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Semester Abroad<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Faculty-led Programs <\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Semester Abroad<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Semester\/summer students generally arrange housing directly with universities or program providers. You will select a housing option prior to your departure.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the host program, you may choose between a homestay, a dorm, or an independent apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Many universities and programs require student to live in housing arranged by the program. In most cases, housing fees are paid by the student directly to the university or program provider.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend that you find a housing option that maximizes integration into the host culture, whether through living with a local host family or with local students.<\/p>\n<p>Meal options will also vary. You may find yourself eating 3 meals a day with your host family, have on-campus dining hall options, or cook for yourself in a dorm or apartment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Faculty-led Programs <\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Lodging and most meals are coordinated for you and included as part of the program cost.<\/p>\n<p>Students on faculty-led programs typically stay in a hotel or apartment.<\/p>\n<p>You may stay in more than one type of accommodation during the program.<\/p>\n<p>The students and faculty leaders are housed in the same lodging location.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can choose to take your WSU laptop with you abroad. Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Laptop-Information-Sheet-2016.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Laptop-Information-Sheet-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using WSU laptops away from campus<\/a>&nbsp;(PDF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experiential Learning&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some faculty-led, semester and summer programs include an internship, a field experience, or service-learning opportunity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grades &amp; GPA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Semester Abroad<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Faculty-led Programs <\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Semester Abroad<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>The Study Abroad Office receives student transcripts from host institutions and programs, which may take up to three months after a summer or semester study abroad program ends.<\/p>\n<p>Your transcript is then sent to the WSU Registrar, which will enter grade information into your DARS.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any financial hold from the host institution, your grades may be delayed.<\/p>\n<p>Study abroad grades are calculated in Transfer GPA and the Cumulative GPA.<\/p>\n<p>Courses taken abroad that count towards a major will be included in the Major GPA calculation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Faculty-led Programs <\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Grades from faculty-led program courses are due during the term in which the program took place.<\/p>\n<p>These grades are calculated in your GPA just like courses taken on the WSU campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prepare\">Prepare for Travel&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Passports<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Need a passport? Then contact your host university, program provider staff, or faculty leader.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a non-immediate problem arises while you are abroad, get in touch with your host university, program provider staff, or faculty leader. A good place to start learning about how to do this is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transitionsabroad.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transitions Abroad<\/a>.\u00a0Transitions Abroad offers articles, paid and unpaid work and internship opportunities, volunteer organizations, and resume advice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working Holiday Jobs<\/strong><br \/>\nFor students seeking temporary work, there are services like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bunac.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bunac<\/a>.\u00a0Bunac is a fee-based service that will secure a \u201choliday maker\u201d work visa for you and help you find temporary employment in about 14 different countries, usually for jobs like summer camp counselors, bartenders, or hotel staff.<\/p>\n<p>For short-term opportunities, see websites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpx.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HelpX<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.workaway.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Workaway<\/a>. These sites connect hosts seeking temporary help from travelers who want non-tourist experiences. You join the community (usually for a small fee), and then search for hosts with work or activities that you&#8217;re interested in.
