Regulations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/administration.winona.edu\/policies\/grants-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Policy 2-8<\/a>&nbsp;states that all proposals submitted to external agencies, including federal, state, and private funding sources and foundations must be approved before submission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Human Subjects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/administration.winona.edu\/policies\/use-of-human-subjects-in-research-policy\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/administration.winona.edu\/policies\/use-of-human-subjects-in-research-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Policy 3-7<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/administration.winona.edu\/policies\/use-of-human-subjects-in-research-procedure\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/administration.winona.edu\/policies\/use-of-human-subjects-in-research-procedure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Procedure 3-7A<\/a> states that all research involving human subjects must be approved by the WSU&nbsp;Institutional Review Board (IRB)&nbsp;before initiating research activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All students, faculty, and staff must complete the Human Subjects Research Education Module before submitting protocols to the WSU&nbsp;IRB.<\/p>\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/research\/research-compliance\/#irb\" class=\"wsu-link cta-button cta-button--external cta-button--lime cta-button-- cta-button--light\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\" >\n    <span>WSU Institutional Review Board<\/span>\n<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Animal Care &amp; Amanda Brouwer, Justin Geijer, and Alexandru Stana. The Human Protections Administrator is&nbsp;Tyler Treptow-Bowman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IRB Approval for Research Studies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All scholarship and research involving\u202fhuman subjects\u202fmust be approved by the IRB before research activities begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Does your study involve human subjects?<\/strong>\u202fHuman subjects are living individuals about whom an investigator obtains information or specimens through intervention or interaction and uses, studies, or analyzes the information or bio-specimens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Does your study meet the definition of research?<\/strong>\u202fResearch a \u201csystematic investigations, including development, testing, and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge\u201d.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All studies involving human subjects with the intent or possibility of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/research\/publications\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"149\">publication<\/a> or dissemination of results outside the classroom must also receive IRB approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsure if your study involves human subjects research and needs IRB approval? Use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u202fWSU Institutional Animal Care &amp; Use Committee\u202f(IACUC)&nbsp;oversees care and use of animals used in teaching and research in accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.winona.edu\/grants\/Media\/Animal-Welfare-Assurance-for-Domestic-Institutions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WSU&#8217;s&nbsp;Animal Welfare Assurance<\/a> (PDF) through the <a href=\"https:\/\/olaw.nih.gov\/home.htm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/olaw.nih.gov\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Institute of Health&nbsp;Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare<\/a>&nbsp;(OLAW).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IACUC reviews animal use protocols, ensures compliance with university and\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/olaw.nih.gov\/policies-laws\/phs-policy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federal policies\u202fand regulations<\/a>, conducts semi-annual program review and inspection of animal research facilities, and coordinates animal training and education programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IACUC Chair is&nbsp;Dr. Amy Runck&nbsp;and the Institutional Official is&nbsp;Dr. Darrell Newton, Provost &amp;
