{"id":7504,"date":"2026-01-21T09:51:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T15:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/?page_id=7504"},"modified":"2026-01-21T09:51:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T15:51:08","slug":"counselor-education-department","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/education\/counselor-education-department\/","title":{"rendered":"Counselor Education Department"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In WSU Counselor Education Department programs, you\u2019ll learn counseling skills, group facilitation, career development, and other competencies through coursework and engagement in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We offer 4 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/education\/counselor-education-department\/programs\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7515\">programs<\/a> that&nbsp;will give you meaningful knowledge and experience in your area of interest.&nbsp;Our programs feature: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Evening classes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Classes on Winona and Rochester campuses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learning in online, hybrid, and in-person courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Community-based learning experiences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flexible internship opportunities throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and across the nation as available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you earn your degree, you&#8217;ll be well prepared to work in a wide range of professional counseling settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Counselor Education Department partners with schools, mental health agencies, and area organizations to provide students with the authentic learning experiences they need to excel in a variety of counseling fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mission Statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of the Counselor Education Department is to prepare school and clinical mental health counselors who can:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>build professional relationships that empower individuals, groups, and families to accomplish mental health, educational, wellness, and career goals&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide socially conscious prevention, remediation, and growth-enhancing interventions to individuals, groups, and families within a multicultural and pluralistic society<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goals &amp; Objectives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Counselor Education Department engages in the quality preparation of school and clinical mental health counselors through core and track-specific curriculum. We aim to help counseling students meet the needs of individuals, groups, and families in agency, school, and community settings within a multicultural and pluralistic society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To better assure a consistent and quality educational experience for all counseling students, the Counselor Education Department adopted program goals and objectives in accordance with the 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cacrep.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs<\/a> (CACREP) standards in the following 8 common core curricular areas: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Professional Orientation and Ethical Practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social and Cultural Diversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Human Growth and Development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Career Development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping Relationships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Group Work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research and Program Evaluation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these objectives are also implemented in the Human Services Professional program and they are aligned to specific courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>View the Counselor Education Department&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Counselor-Education-Department-Goals-and-Objectives.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">goal statements and program objectives<\/a> (PDF) for the 8 core curricular areas as well as the Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling Program tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community Engagement Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>WSU\u2019s Counselor Education Department makes a big difference in our community and surrounding areas each year. Its internships and practicums have a significant economic impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These programs also increase community engagement through volunteer work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Economic Impact <\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Advocacy Efforts<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Economic Impact <\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>During the 2021-2022 academic year, the Counselor Education Department&#8217;s impact on local communities was more than $350,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4 part-time Clinical Mental Health Counselor Interns contributed $43,848 to the total impact<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fall 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>14 Clinical Mental Health Counseling Practicum students and 9 School Counseling Practicum students contributed $105,116 to the total impact<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spring 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7 full-time Clinical Mental Health Counselors, 9 full-time School Counselor Interns, and 3 part-time Clinical Metal Health Counselors contributed $202,545 to the total impact<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Advocacy Efforts<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>During the Fall 2021 term, students enrolled in CE 601: Foundations of Counseling volunteered in the following agencies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Freeborn County Hospice Programs<\/li>\n<li>Feed My People Food Bank, Eau Claire, WI<\/li>\n<li>Alternative Learning Center, Rochester, MN<\/li>\n<li>REACH Resource Center of Mankato<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s Shelter and Support Center of Rochester<\/li>\n<li>Advocacy Center of Winona<\/li>\n<li>WSU Counseling Center<\/li>\n<li>New Horizons, La Crosse, WI<\/li>\n<li>Willow Boutique, La Crosse, WI<\/li>\n<li>Big Brothers Big Sister, Seven Rivers Region, WI<\/li>\n<li>Bluff County Co-op<\/li>\n<li>Crestwood Jr. High, Creso, Iowa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Counselor Education Department\u2019s Rho Sigma Upsilon society supports a student in Guatemala through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonhope.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Common Hope<\/a>\u00a0since 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
