{"id":8489,"date":"2026-01-21T10:01:35","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T16:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/?page_id=8489"},"modified":"2026-01-21T10:01:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T16:01:36","slug":"k-12-principalship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/education\/leadership-education-department\/programs\/k-12-principalship\/","title":{"rendered":"K-12 Principalship Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The K-12 Principal program is designed for individuals who wish to receive education beyond a master&#8217;s degree in leadership roles such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Elementary or secondary principal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assistant principal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dean<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Athletics director<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Curriculum director<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positions related to policy analysis and research in government and NGO agencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WSU will work with those holding an out of state administrative license to develop an individualized plan to earn Minnesota licensure per the criteria outlined in Minnesota Rule 3512.2500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Certificate &amp; Licensure Option<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Degree Option<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Certificate &amp; Licensure Option<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>The K-12 Principal Certificate is for students seeking endorsement for state (MN and WI) licensure as a K-12 Principal but not seeking the Specialist (EdS) degree.<\/p>\n<p>The K-12 Principal is a formal licensure area for Minnesota schools.<\/p>\n<p>Licensure is a state function through the Minnesota Board of School Administrators (BOSA), for which the WSU Leadership Education Department is an approved program aligning with the rules outlined in Minnesota Rule 3512.2500.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin accepts the WSU endorsement for K-12 Principal, and Iowa requires that the candidate receive a Minnesota K-12 Principal license.<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota K-12 Principal license is accepted for a provisional principal\u2019s license, in many other states.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Degree Option<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>The K-12 Principal is also an emphasis within the Education Specialist Degree (EdS) in Education Leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The EdS degree requires the same coursework and experiences as licensure with the addition of six credits related to research and scholarly study.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Required Coursework<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any graduate coursework taken in leadership may be used to waive required coursework. Extended experience in a specific area of leadership may be considered when completing a program of study. See your academic advisor for details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Course&nbsp;descriptions and additional information about the <a href=\"https:\/\/w3.winona.edu\/DataServices\/WSUCatalog\/3285\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">K-12 Principal&nbsp;Licensure<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/w3.winona.edu\/DataServices\/WSUCatalog\/3153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">K-12 Principal&nbsp;Degree<\/a>&nbsp;are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Licensure Option<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Degree Option<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-3\">Internships<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Licensure Option<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Licensure\u00a0as a K-12 Principal requires\u00a0students to\u00a0have completed 3 years as a teacher in an area in which they were certified as a teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Social workers, school counselors and school psychologists who do not have the 3 years of classroom experience are required to complete 1,050 hours in a teaching internship before being licensed as a K-12 Principal.<\/p>\n<p>Licensure as a K-12 Principal requires the following coursework:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24 credits of EdS Core Courses (or their equivalent done at the master\u2019s level)<\/li>\n<li>6 credits specific to the K-12 Principalship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Minnesota rules require a principal to have at least 60 credits past their bachelor&#8217;s degree.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Degree Option<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>For the Education Specialist Degree\u00a0students must complete a minimum of 30 credits beyond the Master\u2019s Degree. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24 credits of licensure courses (or their equivalent done at the master&#8217;s level)<\/li>\n<li>6 credits of internships for the K-12 Principalship<\/li>\n<li>6 credits related to research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Up to 10 graduate credits (beyond the MS degree) may be transferred into a WSU EdS degree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Field Study<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students are required to complete a field study as part of \u00a0the EdS degree.<\/p>\n<p>The field study is a scholarly or academic activity intended to better prepare a leader for the meaningful understanding of schools and organizations by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identifying a research question<\/li>\n<li>Understanding how others have answered the question<\/li>\n<li>Collecting and analyzing relevant data<\/li>\n<li>Preparing a written summary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students have a writing seminar course where they review how the scientific method may be applied to social activities and human behavior.<\/p>\n<p>During this experience, a final document is prepared (the field study) and students\u00a0prepare for a professional dialogue with\u00a0their field study committees (often called the defense).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Internships<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Each internship is 160 hours, where students are immersed in the environment, activities, decisions, and tasks of a K-12 principal.<\/p>\n<p>The site for the internship is initiated by the student, and a site supervisor (a practicing school principal) approached.<\/p>\n<p>The University Internship Supervisor will finalize these arrangements or can assist in finding a site and supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>Site visits by the University Supervisor are used to initiate a list of activities for the semester and review the candidate\u2019s engagement at the end of the semester.<\/p>\n<p>A reflective journal is kept to personalize the internship experiences and formalize connections to course work and leadership theories.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Licensure as K-12 Principal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Licensure candidates must be approved by the Licensing Review Panel before being endorsed for a Minnesota and\/or Wisconsin license.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All course work and internships must have been completed before meeting with the panel in early May or December. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your advisor and the licensing officer will provide more detail about the licensing review panel during your final internship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apply for a Minnesota state license through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/education.mn.gov\/MDE\/dse\/\">Minnesota Department of Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To apply for a Wisconsin state license, complete the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/WI-State-Li-App-2005.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WI PI 1612 Institutional Endorsements and Assurances&nbsp;Form<\/a> (PDF).<\/p>\n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                            <div class=\"h3\">Contact Leadership Education<\/div>\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<div class=\"wsu-block grid grid--50\">\n    <div class=\"wsu-block contact-card mb-1\">\n   <div class=\"contact-card__content\">\n       <div class=\"contact-card__title h4\">\n           Leadership Education\n       <\/div>\n       <div class=\"contact-card__subtitle h4\">\n           \n       <\/div>\n       <div class=\"contact-card__description\">\n           <p>Helble Hall 319<\/p>\n<p>507.457.5335<\/p>\n\n       <\/div>\n       <a class=\"wsu-link contact-card__link\"><\/a>\n   <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wsu-block contact-card mb-1\">\n   <div class=\"contact-card__content\">\n       <div class=\"contact-card__title h4\">\n           Steven M.
