{"id":8493,"date":"2026-01-21T09:57:45","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T15:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/?page_id=8493"},"modified":"2026-01-21T09:57:47","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T15:57:47","slug":"superintendent","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/education\/leadership-education-department\/programs\/superintendent\/","title":{"rendered":"Superintendent Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Superintendent program&nbsp;is designed for individuals who wish to receive education beyond the master&#8217;s degree in a district-level leadership role, such as a school superintendent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Certificate &amp; Licensure Option<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Degree Option<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Certificate &amp; Licensure Option<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>The K-12 Principal Certificate acknowledges students seeking endorsement for state (MN and WI) licensure as a K-12 Principal but not seeking the Specialist (EdS) degree.<\/p>\n<p>This is a formal licensure area for Minnesota schools.<\/p>\n<p>Licensure is a state function through the Minnesota Board of School Administrators (BOSA), for which the WSU Education Leadership Department is an approved program aligning with the rules outlined in Minnesota Rule 3512.2500.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin accepts the WSU endorsement for Superintendent and Iowa requires the candidate receive a Minnesota K-12 superintendent license.<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota Superintendent license is accepted for at least a provisional superintendent&#8217;s license in many other states.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Degree Option<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>The\u00a0superintendency\u00a0is also an emphasis within the Education Specialist Degree (EdS) in Education Leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The EdS degree requires the same coursework and experiences as licensure with the addition of 6 credits related to research and scholarly study.<\/p>\n<p>The Superintendency licensure can also be obtained as an area of emphasis within the doctoral program for those already licensed as a K-12 principal.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Required Coursework<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Any graduate coursework taken in leadership may be used to waive required coursework. Extended experience in a specific area of leadership may be considered when completing a program of study. See your academic advisor for details.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Course descriptions&nbsp;and additional information about the <a href=\"http:\/\/w3.winona.edu\/DataServices\/WSUCatalog\/3302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Superintendent&nbsp;Licensure<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/w3.winona.edu\/DataServices\/WSUCatalog\/3157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Superintendent Education Specialist&nbsp;Degree<\/a> is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Licensure Option<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Degree Option<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-3\">Internships<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Licensure Option<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Licensure as a superintendent requires that you have completed three years as a teacher in the area in which you were certified. Licensure as a Superintendent requires the following coursework:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24 credits of licensure courses (or their equivalent done at the master\u2019s level)<\/li>\n<li>6 credits of internship for the Superintendency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are already licensed as a K12 principal or director of special education in Minnesota, you may be able to complete the superintendent licensure in as few as 2 additional courses plus the 2 internships.<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota rules require a superintendent to have at least 60 credits past their bachelor&#8217;s degree.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Degree Option<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>For the Education Specialist Degree you must complete a minimum of 30 credits beyond the Master\u2019s Degree. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24 credits of licensure courses (or their equivalent done at the master\u2019s level)<\/li>\n<li>6 credits of internship for the Superintendency<\/li>\n<li>6 credits related to research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Up to 10 graduate credits (beyond the MS degree) may be transferred into a WSU EdS degree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Field Study<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students are required to complete a field study as part of the EdS degree.<\/p>\n<p>The field study is a scholarly or academic activity intended to better prepare a leader for the meaningful understanding of schools and organizations by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identifying a research question<\/li>\n<li>Understanding how others have answered the question<\/li>\n<li>Collecting and analyzing relevant data<\/li>\n<li>Preparing a written summary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During this experience, a final document is prepared (the field study) and\u00a0students prepare for a professional dialogue with\u00a0their field study committees (often called the defense).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Internships<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Each internship is 160 hours, and students are immersed in the environment, activities, decisions, and tasks of a superintendent.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0site for the internship is initiated by the student, who also approaches a site supervisor (a practicing superintendent).<\/p>\n<p>The University Internship Supervisor will finalize these arrangements or can assist in finding a site and site supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>Site visits by the University Supervisor are used to initiate a list of activities for the semester and review the candidate\u2019s engagement at the end of the semester.<\/p>\n<p>A reflective journal is kept to personalize the internship experiences and formalize connections to course work and leadership theories.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applying for Licensure as Superintendent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Candidates for licensure must be approved by the Licensing Review Panel before being endorsed for a Minnesota and\/or Wisconsin license.
