If you want to work with students who are learning English as a second language, the Teaching English as a Second Language program is a great option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s important that you\u2019re comfortable in a classroom setting before you graduate. That\u2019s why we build student teaching opportunities right into the curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This licensure program will prepare you to teach English grades K\u201312 and meet the requirements set by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board<\/a> (PELSB) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Declare Your Major in Teaching English as a Second Language<\/span>\n<\/a>\n\n

If you want to be an elementary through high school teacher for students whose first language isn\u2019t English, then the Teaching English as a Second Language (ESLT) (K \u2013 12) major is the major for you. <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n

Program at a Glance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Teaching English as a Second Language major<\/a> consists of 67 credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’ll learn the theory and practice of language teaching through the Teacher Education Program. You’ll also complete coursework in language study, grammar, second language acquisition, and pedagogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should apply for the Teacher Education Program<\/a> by the end of your second or third semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you complete this program, you\u2019ll graduate with not only a bachelor\u2019s degree, but also a teaching license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Teaching Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll complete at least 2 years of second\/foreign language instruction in a high school setting or at least one year in a college setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either experience will prepare you to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) for grades K\u201312 in public school settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
