{"id":9735,"date":"2023-10-13T12:02:14","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T17:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/?page_id=9735"},"modified":"2024-02-28T14:17:49","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T20:17:49","slug":"wayne-ripley","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/academics\/colleges\/liberal-arts\/english-department\/faculty-staff\/wayne-ripley\/","title":{"rendered":"Wayne Ripley"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Professor Chuck Ripley was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Chuuk, Micronesia from 1994 to 1996 and an election supervisor in Bosnia in the spring of 1997. He completed his Masters at the University of Tennessee in 1999, where he wrote his thesis on William Blake\u2019s The Four Zoas. From 2004 to 2006, he was a visiting professor at SUNY Geneseo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2006, he was awarded his Ph.D. at the University of Rochester in New York for his dissertation, The Secrets of Dark Contemplation: Edward Young, William Blake, and the History of Radical Devotional Poetics, 1688-1795. This work discusses Blake\u2019s relationship to Young through the lens of religious and poetic enthusiasm in the eighteenth century and is currently being revised for publication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Ripley\u2019s other research interests include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>religious print culture and Whig politics in the long 18th century<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>literacy and orality in discourses of global development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sustainability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>popular culture and the development of the comic strip and the contemporary graphic novel&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Ripley teaches writing classes on topics such as race and boxing in America and the comic strip and graphic novel.
