Now, get the credit you earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exact way your prior credits will transfer to Winona State University depends on the type of institution, program, or exam you used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick breakdown for how transfer credits generally work for undergraduate programs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>WSU will determine what credits transfer and whether they meet degree requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WSU accepts D grades or better for transfer. WSU will review credits from courses and programs and look for equivalencies to course goals, content, and level of instruction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not everything that transfers counts toward graduation requirements. Degree programs usually count credits in three categories: general education, prerequisites, and major\/minor courses or electives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a sense of how your credits will transfer, check for course equivalencies in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transferology.com\/school\/winona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transferology<\/a>. You can also find many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mntransfer.org\/students\/students.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tools and resources for transfer students online<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also be able to earn credit through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/admissions\/apply\/transfer-credits#credit-by-exam\">credit by exam process<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/admissions\/apply\/transfer-credits#portfolio-review\">portfolio review<\/a>. This is helpful if you&#8217;ve gathered relevant prior learning experiences outside formal education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"types-of-credits\">Types of Credits<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block accordion\">\n        <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Advanced_Placement_(AP)_Exam\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Advanced_Placement_(AP)_Exam\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Advanced Placement (AP) Exam        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>WSU will give undergraduate course credit for scores of 3 or higher on most Advanced Placement exams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There&#8217;s an exception for the English Language and Composition Exam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll need to score a 4 or 5 to receive 3 college credits toward WSU&#8217;s freshman English requirement (ENG 111). Then you only have to take a 1-credit class (English 112) to complete this skills requirement for graduation.<\/p>\n<p>If you score a 3 on either the Language and Composition or the Literature and Composition AP tests, you&#8217;ll receive 3 general elective credits.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"International_Baccalaureate_(IB)_Exam\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"International_Baccalaureate_(IB)_Exam\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            International Baccalaureate (IB) Exam        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>You may receive 3 or more course credits for scores of 4 or higher on individual Higher Level IB exams.<\/p>\n<p>If you earn an IB diploma, you&#8217;ll be granted 6 undergraduate credits for scores of 4 or higher on each Higher Level IB exam.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll receive 2 undergraduate credits for scores of 4 or higher on each Standard Level IB exam.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"IGCSE,_Cambridge_Advanced_Level_(A-Level)_Exams\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"IGCSE,_Cambridge_Advanced_Level_(A-Level)_Exams\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            IGCSE, Cambridge Advanced Level (A-Level) Exams        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>Results from IGCSE, Cambridge Advanced Level (A-Level) exams are considered for advanced credit.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"College_Level_Examination_Program_(CLEP)_Exam\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"College_Level_Examination_Program_(CLEP)_Exam\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Exam        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a testing program from The College Board that&#8217;s designed to measure prior learning.<\/p>\n<p>WSU will grant credit for CLEP exams if a student receives a score of 50 or higher on the exam.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"College_or_University_Credits\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"College_or_University_Credits\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            College or University Credits        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>All credits earned at any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chea.org\/directories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accredited college or university<\/a> will be reviewed for application toward the selected degree program. WSU also has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/admissions\/transfer-pathways-programs\/\">transfer pathway programs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnstate.edu\/admissions\/transfer\/agreements\/search\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transfer agreements<\/a> in place with select colleges.<\/p>\n<p>WSU has the right to determine whether previous coursework provides a suitable base for advanced study.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transfer Credits for General Education Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Transfer credits meet WSU&#8217;s General Education Program (GEP) requirements if you have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>earned an Associate of Arts degree after May 1985<\/li>\n<li>earned a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science<\/li>\n<li>completed the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mntransfer.org\/students\/plan\/s_mntc.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MnTC<\/a>), including through Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science degree programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;re transferring to WSU from a participating institution and you&#8217;ve satisfied all 10 educational goals of the MnTC, you&#8217;ll get credit for completing all general education requirements.<\/p>\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/w3.winona.edu\/publicreports\/?reportname=Registrar%2fGEP+Accepted+Courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">current WSU courses that meet MnTC goal areas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>WSU complies with Minnesota State College and University guidelines, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minnstate.edu\/board\/policy\/321.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Undergraduate Course Credit Transfer Policy<\/a> (3.21) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minnstate.edu\/board\/procedure\/321p1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Procedure<\/a> (3.21.1) as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minnstate.edu\/board\/policy\/339.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transfer Rights and Responsibilities<\/a> (3.39).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transfer Graduate Level Credits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have credits from graduate study that you would like to transfer to WSU, complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/warriorspace.winona.edu\/ProcessDirector\/custom\/pages\/login.aspx?bp_nextpage=https%3a%2f%2fwarriorspace.winona.edu%2fProcessDirector%2fform.aspx%3fpid%3dcbc76cfa-e332-489a-a868-237dcf390893%26formid%3d32faf7ea-80e4-4a0b-a5eb-d2adacfcc010%26forminstid%3d%26wfinstid%3d%26prinstid%3d%26tlid%3d%26testmode%3d%26parsecontrols%3d%26CTRun%3d%26CTConfigure%3d%26CTContainerFORMID%3d%26CTContaine&amp;skipintegrated=&amp;skipsaml=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graduate Transfer Credit Evaluation Form<\/a>.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Technical_College_Credits\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Technical_College_Credits\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Technical College Credits        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>Contact Admissions at <a href=\"mailto:wsutransfer@winona.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wsutransfer@winona.edu<\/a> if you&#8217;re interested in transferring credits from technical colleges.<\/p>\n<p>WSU will accept a 16-credit general elective package of college-level technical courses offered by institutions with appropriate regional accreditation.<\/p>\n<p>Some departments may offer course transfer credit of technical classes that apply to a program of study. Students can obtain a special form to facilitate the process.<\/p>\n<p>Students are considered transfer students if they&#8217;re entering WSU from a technical college. They must submit an official transcript from the technical college.<\/p>\n<p>A high school transcript and appropriate admission test scores also are required for admission.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"International_Credits\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"International_Credits\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            International Credits        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>Winona State University determines which credits transfer from international universities and whether they meet degree requirements.<\/p>\n<p>To receive credits for international work completed, an official evaluation completed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naces.org\/members\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NACES<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/aice-eval.org\/members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AICE<\/a> member agency must be submitted to International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) at <a href=\"mailto:is@winona.edu\">is@winona.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We aren&#8217;t able to provide you information on how many credits will be accepted until the credit evaluation report is received. So, you should submit this evaluation as soon as possible once you&#8217;re admitted to WSU.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/admissions\/apply\/international\/\">applying to WSU as an international student<\/a>.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Military_Credits\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Military_Credits\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Military Credits        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>Veterans may be granted academic credit for formal military schools they attended while on active duty.<\/p>\n<p>WSU Admissions uses the American Council on Education&#8217;s <a title=\"Guide to Evaluation Experience in the Armed Forces\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acenet.edu\/news-room\/Pages\/Military-Guide-Online.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guide to the Evaluation Experience in the Armed Forces<\/a> to evaluate military experience. You&#8217;ll need to provide a copy of your SMART, AARTS, or CCAF transcript for this evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about how you can get <a title=\"Military Transfer Information\" href=\"http:\/\/www.minnstate.edu\/college-search\/public\/military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credit for experience in military branches<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANTES Subject Standardized Tests<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"DANTES Subject Standards Tests Program\" href=\"https:\/\/getcollegecredit.com\/what_is_dsst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)<\/a> can be individually reviewed by WSU academic departments.<\/p>\n<p>DANTES funds DSST testing for eligible service members and personnel at <a title=\"Find DANTES Test Centers\" href=\"https:\/\/getcollegecredit.com\/institutions\/search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DANTES military test centers<\/a>.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Post-Secondary_Enrollment_Option_(PSEO)\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Post-Secondary_Enrollment_Option_(PSEO)\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO)        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>Students who were enrolled in PSEO courses must transfer those credits to WSU regardless of their earned grade. You can find course equivalencies for PSEO courses through <a title=\"Transferology\" href=\"https:\/\/www.transferology.com\/school\/winona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transferology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If your PSEO or College in the Schools (CIS) credits are from a <a title=\"Minnesota State Colleges and Universities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.minnstate.edu\/campusesprograms\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota State college or university<\/a>, just let WSU Admissions know and we&#8217;ll retrieve those transcripts automatically.<\/p>\n<p>If your credit is earned at any non-Minnesota State school, you&#8217;ll need to ask them to send your official transcript to WSU Admissions.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"3-Year_Nursing_Program_Credits\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"3-Year_Nursing_Program_Credits\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            3-Year Nursing Program Credits        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>Licensed registered nurses (RN) who&#8217;ve completed 3-year hospital training programs may receive 48 semester (72 quarter) credits of electives toward any undergraduate degree program, except nursing.<\/p>\n<p>32 semester credits will be applicable to lower-division coursework. 16 semester credits can be applied to upper-division coursework.<\/p>\n<p>To transfer these credits, you&#8217;ll need to provide proof that you successfully completed the necessary RN tests.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact WSU Admissions at <a href=\"mailto:admissions@winona.edu\">admissions@winona.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Correspondence_Courses\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Correspondence_Courses\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Correspondence Courses        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>WSU accepts some correspondence work toward a degree.<\/p>\n<p>Please contact WSU Admissions at <a title=\"Email WSU Admissions\" href=\"mailto:admissions@winona.edu\">admissions@winona.edu<\/a> if you&#8217;re interested in transferring correspondence coursework.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"appealing-a-transfer-credit-decision\">Appealing a Transfer Credit Decision<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All students have the right to appeal transfer credit decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t yet enrolled at WSU, print out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/WSU-Transfer-Credit-Appeal-Form.pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/WSU-Transfer-Credit-Appeal-Form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WSU Transfer Decision Appeal Form<\/a> (PDF) and send it to the Admissions Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re already enrolled, please use the online <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/warriorspace.winona.edu\/ProcessDirector\/form.aspx?pid=cbc76cfa-e332-489a-a868-237dcf390893&amp;formid=c5076c8e-0b37-4882-b18d-74af6c47f30a&amp;forminstid=&amp;wfinstid=&amp;prinstid=&amp;tlid=&amp;testmode=&amp;parsecontrols=&amp;CTRun=&amp;CTConfigure=&amp;CTContainerFORMID=&amp;CTContainerWFID=&amp;CTContainerRULEID=&amp;CTContainerPRID=&amp;completepage=&amp;completepageprompt=&amp;completetext=&amp;url=&amp;INFOMSG=&amp;linkwfid=&amp;linkprid=&amp;nottask=&amp;findtask=&amp;caseinstid=&amp;indash=&amp;incasef=&amp;targetportlet=0&amp;howtoopen=1\" target=\"_blank\">Degree Audit and Transfer Credit Request form<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WSU also complies with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.minnstate.edu\/board\/procedure\/321p1.html\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota State system transfer credit appeal procedure<\/a> (3.21.1).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"credit-by-exam\">Credits by Exam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can satisfy a course\u2019s requirements by a written or oral examination, you may be able to get credit without formally enrolling in that course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a way to receive credit for equivalent study at a non-accredited school, independent study, and related work experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students cannot use this process to repeat a course to improve a grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start the process, you should meet with the faculty member offering the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be enrolled and have at least a 2.0 GPA at WSU during the semester you wish to get credit by exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Credits by exam cost $50 per credit and will be posted to your student\u2019s record at the end of the term. These credits do not count toward determining full-time status.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"portfolio-review\">Portfolio Review<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A portfolio review is an opportunity to present a coherent, carefully organized, and convincing case that identifies specific learning outcomes which you\u2019ve gained through your life experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WSU faculty evaluators may recommend that credits be awarded if you can demonstrate that what you have learned is substantially equivalent to the level and depth of knowledge you would acquire in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Start a Portfolio Review<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You must complete this process at least 6 months prior to graduation. It will take you a significant investment to put together a compelling portfolio, and there\u2019s no guarantee you will receive credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">Meet with an Advisor<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Prepare Your Portfolio<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-3\">Submit Your Request<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Meet with an Advisor<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Email <a href=\"mailto:continuingeducation@winona.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continuingeducation@winona.edu<\/a> to make an appointment to meet with an Adult Entry Process Advisor and bring along a brief outline of your prior learning experience.<\/p>\n<p>The Adult Entry Process Advisor will help you realistically evaluate your experiences and determine whether the portfolio process is right for you.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Prepare Your Portfolio<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>If you&#8217;re a good candidate for portfolio review, you will compile the material that demonstrates your prior learning into a portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to preparation of written material, you may be required to give an interview or demonstrate competency in other ways.<\/p>\n<p>The process of assembling a satisfactory portfolio can be time consuming, and there is no guarantee that credit will be awarded. The decision to recommend equivalency credits rests with the faculty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Categorize Your Work Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using the current WSU Undergraduate Catalog, divide your work experience and training into categories that would fit in academic departments at WSU. For example, computer skills would most likely be taught in Computer Science or Management Information Systems, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Each academic area will be reviewed separately, so, if you are seeking credit for more than one area, you will need to prepare an individual portfolio for each area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Identify Knowledge Skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Begin with work experience identifying knowledge, skills and competencies demonstrated by your job functions. Identify job positions, employers and length of time spent working in each category of job responsibilities\/requirements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Identify Formal &amp; Informal Training<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Identify all formal and informal training you have received in each job area excluding training for which you have received formal college credit (either from WSU or by approved transfer credit).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calculate Time<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Calculate or estimate the amount of time spent in non-credit bearing training for each category or area that you plan to submit for credit evaluation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Include Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Include any other resources you have utilized as part of your prior learning experience that would contribute to the knowledge, skills or competencies being used as a basis for your credit evaluation request.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prepare a Written Narrative<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prepare a written narrative of your prior learning that specifically details the learning outcomes you have received as a result. This would cost $100 to assess both portfolios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If equivalency credits are granted, you will have to pay an additional charge for each credit. This charge amounts to 50% of the resident undergraduate credit hour tuition rate.
