Holly Al-Abad, Art Education '18

"After returning to WSU as a non-traditional student, I chose to go for something I was passionate about: Art Education. Yes, there are real jobs out there!

Immediately after graduating in December 2018, I was able to temp until the end of that school year. Then I was offered a contract for the following fall in La Crescent, MN. I have been here ever since! I teach fifth through twelfth graders.

Teaching allows time to work on personal projects as well. Finding a good fit with your school district is essential, and I am fortunate to work where I do. It’s a great day to be a Lancer!"

"I graduated from Winona State in 2017 with a Bachelor’s in Graphic Design and I am currently pursuing a Master of Landscape Architecture at Pennsylvania State University.

After graduation, I worked in a range of roles from guiding high risk activities in both the United States and Canada, to developing new engineering/surveying capabilities for a construction firm.

My Graphic Design degree has been both versatile and valuable, and the skills I learned at WSU have far broader applications than I realized. When I applied to Landscape Architecture programs I was accepted into all seven schools I applied to.

The Art and Design faculty have also strongly supported me in the time since I graduated, writing letters of reference, discussing graduate program options, reviewing application statements, and more.

As I move to the next stage of my professional career, I am very grateful for the education and support I received at Winona State."

"I work as a graphic designer at Hormel Foods Corporate Headquarters in Austin, MN. I started as a designer for Studio H within Hormel, which designed a variety of material for use across the company.

I now am one of two designers in the newly created Studio B. I work on brand identity, from e-commerce images to social media posts, to printed campaigns, to websites.

My current focus is art direction for our in-house Food Studio, working with food stylists and photographers to bring the brand management’s ideas to life."
