Scholarship Opportunities

There are a number of scholarships available to students in the College of Business. 

Cass and Mary Gordon Scholarship

  • Undergraduate
  • Full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • College of Business student
  • Non-traditional student (may be new or lapsed WSU or transfer student)
  • Must demonstrate financial need (not solely based on FAFSA)
  • Submit essay with the following:
    -Why you have chosen to attend WSU at this time
    -Explanation of current non-traditional student circumstances
    -Explanation of current financial need

Daniel R. Mortensen Family Scholarship

  • First-generation college student (first in the family to attend/graduate from a four-year college/university)
  • Full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Working toward degree in Business Administration with a focus in Business Management or Economics
  • Sophomore, junior or senior
  • GPA or 3.0 or higher (preference shall be given to students with 3.25 or higher)
  • Must demonstrate financial need (not solely based on FAFSA)
  • Preference given to student who demonstrates strong work ethic (working to help pay for college, especially on holidays, weekends, and working odd jobs)
    -Emphasis: a student who understands the value of education and is willing to work to achieve their academic goals
  • Preference given to a student involved in campus and/or community activities beyond classroom (demonstrates leadership skills)
  • Submit essay with the following:
    -Value of higher education from a first-generation perspective
    -Academic and career goals
    -Financial need/how this scholarship will make a difference
    -Evidence of hard work and dedication
    -Evidence of leadership through involvement in campus or community activities

Echo Huang College of Business Scholarship

  • Undergraduate, full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • International student
  • Declared a pre-major or major in the College of Business
  • Freshman, sophomore, junior or senior
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Submit essay with the following:
    -Share your story as an international student at WSU that includes a something about your culture, your educational and career goals and how/why this scholarship will make a difference in achieving your goals. In addition, explain how this scholarship will help you achieve your financial requirement to attend WSU.

Farley and Sathers Candy Co. Scholarship

  • Undergraduate, full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Freshman student with ACT score of 23 or above
  • Expressed an interest in majoring in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Health Administration, Management and Marketing, Management Information Systems or Production/Operations Management
  • Award is renewable for three additional years if GPA is 3.2 or higher

Jim and Caron Nissen College of Business Scholarship

  • Full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Declared major in the College of Business (accounting, business administration, finance, human resources management, management information systems, marketing)
  • Student entering junior or senior year at WSU
  • GPA or 3.0 or higher
  • Must be from Minnesota
  • Must demonstrate financial need (not solely based on FAFSA)

$1500 Renewable Scholarship

  • First-time recipients must be incoming freshman directly from high school
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • High school GPA or 3.86 or higher and or be in top 10% of graduating class
  • Declared major in College of Business
  • Must demonstrate leadership role through one of the following:
    -Community engagement through volunteering
    -Campus engagement (ongoing leadership roles while attending WSU)
    -Employment in field related to chosen field of study
  • Submit essay (300-500 words) with the following:
    -Describe how your volunteer and leadership activities, and/or work experience has helped prepare you for a professional career and assisted you in broadening your community service

Thompson Family College of Business Scholarship

  • 3.0 GPA minimum
  • Freshman, sophomore, junior or senior when receiving award
  • Declared business major
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)

Wells Fargo Bank Scholarship

  • Undergraduate, full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Declared major within College of Business
  • Junior or senior
  • Cumulative GPA or 3.25

R & J Armstrong Family Business Scholarship

  • Full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Student entering junior or senior year
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Preference given to student who demonstrates entrepreneurial interest and has held leadership roles

Mark and Cathy Nichols Business Administration Scholarship

  • Full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Declared/accepted into Business Administration program
  • Must demonstrate financial need (not solely based on FAFSA)
    -Student receiving tuition waiver not eligible
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Preferences:
    -Student who has demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit
    -Student employed on or off campus or has valid reason for not working
    -Student who comes from a single-parent family
  • Submit essay with the following:
    -Explain financial need/why this scholarship will make a difference
    -Explain importance of a strong work ethic; provide examples of your work ethic
    -Explain future goals and career aspirations
    -Describe what "entrepreneurial spirit" means to you

Accounting Department Faculty and Staff Scholarship

  • Undergraduate, full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Declared Accounting major
  • Must have completed ACCT 311
  • Needs at least 16 credits remaining to graduate as of the fall of the new academic year
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Preference given to student who demonstrates financial need based on FAFSA
  • Submit essay with the following:
    -Explain history, current and past participation in activities and programs in school and outside of home
    -Explain future goals and career aspirations

Accounting Faculty and Staff Scholarship

  • Undergraduate full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Declared Accounting major
  • Must have completed ACCT 211 or ACCT 212
  • Must be sophomore or junior
  • Needs to have at least 28 credits remaining to graduate as of the fall of the new academic year
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Preference given to student who demonstrates financial need based on FAFSA
  • Submit essay with the following:
    -Explain history, current and past participation in activities and programs in school and outside of home
    -Explain future goals and career aspirations

Minnesota Society of CPAs Scholarship

  • Undergraduate, full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Accounting major in junior or senior year
  • GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Documented financial need
  • Intent to use it for CPA exam

Duane Peterson Scholarship

  • Declared major in Economics or Finance
  • Must have completed 15 hours of economics and finance courses combined, six of which must have been completed at WSU
  • Must have completed at least 30 hours of course work at WSU
  • GPA of at least 3.0
  • Must demonstrate involvement in university, college and community activities outside the classroom

Greg Ballard Scholarship

  • Undergraduate, full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Junior
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Declared major in Economics or Finance

John Cady Scholarship

  • Undergraduate, full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Junior or senior
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Declared major in Economics or Finance

Robert Biesterfeld Family Marketing Scholarship

  • Full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Declared/accepted into Marketing program
  • Student entering junior year
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75
  • Preference will be given to student who has demonstrated entrepreneurial interest and has demonstrated leadership wither within the university community or outside the university
  • Submit essay with the following:
    -Describe what “entrepreneurial spirit” means to you; how have you demonstrated this in your college career and why is it important to you in your future professional career.
    -Explain why you chose to major in Marketing at Winona State University and what you feel the greatest take-away will be from your experience at WSU and how it will impact you professionally.

  • College of Business major
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • At least a junior by Fall
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

Gordon Espy Scholarship

  • College of Business major (preference to accounting, economics, finance, MIS, or marketing)
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • At least a sophomore by Fall
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA

Helen B. Imm Scholarship 

  • Accounting, business administration, finance, human resources management, MIS, or marketing majors
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Minimum 13 earned COB semester credits
  • Minimum 3.25 GPA

Kujak Transport, Inc. Scholarship (renewable)

  • Business administration, human resources management, or marketing majors
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA

Warren & Dorothy Marley Scholarship 

  • College of Business major
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • At least a senior by Fall 
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

Burl & Nadine Leo Business Scholarship

  • College of Business major
  • At least a sophomore by Fall 
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

Federated Insurance Business Leadership Scholarship

  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • At least a senior by Fall 
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Preference to students authorized to work in the U.S. on permanent basis

Rubenstein Family Scholarship 

  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • At least a junior by Fall 
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Preference to student who demonstrates entrepreneurial interest and who has not received other scholarships

Dr. Joseph H. Foegen Scholarship 

  • Business administration or human resources management major
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • At least a junior by Fall 
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA

Marion J. Deeren Scholarship 

  • Business administration major
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • At least a senior by Fall
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

Michael Garvey Scholarship 

  • Business administration or human resources management major
  • Full-time student (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • At least a senior by Fall
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

Michael Garvey Professional Selling Scholarship

  • Recipient must be accepted into the College of Business, majoring in any of the seven undergraduate major options
  • Recipient must be accepted into the College of Business Professional Selling Minor
  • Full-time student in good standing (12 credit hrs. minimum)
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • reference will be given to students who are members of the College of Business sales team
  • As part of the application process for this scholarship, the student must submit an essay describing the following:
    -Share your educational and professional goals, including life experiences that offered insight or motivation that led to you choosing a career in professional sales. Describe how this scholarship will make a difference in achieving your goals and how it will impact you financially.
