From film history to popular genres, from pre-production through post-production, you’ll learn the fundamentals of filmmaking from both scholarly and technical perspectives.

A film studies degree prepares you for a wide range of jobs because it hones your critical thinking and analytical skills as well as your written and oral communication abilities.

You'll also develop proficiency with software that enables you to edit and produce video content that can be used for a variety of marketing, advertising, informational, and promotional purposes.

Program at a Glance

The Film Studies major consists of 39 credits and the minor consists of 21 credits.

You'll learn about:

  • cinematic techniques and narrative form
  • specific genres, like horror, science fiction, war, documentary, and others
  • American and world cinema
  • the history and scope of narrative filmmaking

You'll also complete coursework and projects in film culture with an emphasis on important historical and critical trends and style.

Film Studies majors and minors are active in a number of projects, courses, and activities that support the making and promotion of films.

Students also work with the Retiree Center for the Living History Project as well as the University Theme to provide WSU’s annual theme-based film series for on-campus and community film appreciators.

You can even write for POVwinona, a WordPress blog dedicated to capturing criticisms, reviews, and other creative work written by Film Studies students.
